Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending the Center for Social Value Creation's (CSVC) Sustainability in Business Conference. It was an insightful and inspiring event, where I had the chance to learn from industry leaders and connect with fellow UMD alums who are making remarkable contributions to sustainability. Some of the amazing conversations I had: 🌱 Krisztina Christmon, Ph.D. shared her journey from being a scientist to an entrepreneur. She emphasized that understanding the business side of things was key to driving sustainable innovation successfully. 🌾 Larry Davis, Lead Consultant for an Ecological Engineering Startup, spoke about the importance of recycling agricultural waste to create a more sustainable world. His work in this field is truly impactful. 🌍 Alphonse I. Kouagou, former Executive Director at the World Bank, discussed the need for digital transformation in Africa, especially around improving access to visas and other key services through technology-driven policies. 🛠️ Bidjan Nashat, Co-Founder at PotentialU, highlighted how big corporations like IKEA are stepping up to support global causes, such as their involvement in supporting camps in Ukraine. 🌾 Cedric N. N from Roots Africa talked about his work with local communities in Africa to solve agricultural challenges and drive sustainable farming practices. The conversations were not only insightful but also motivating, showcasing the role of innovation, policy, and collaboration in creating a sustainable future. It was a great opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals and alumni who are committed to making a difference. Looking forward to continuing these important discussions and contributing to a more sustainable world. #Sustainability #UMDAlumni #BusinessForGood #Innovation #SocialImpact #Agriculture #DigitalTransformation #SustainabilityInBusiness #CSVC #Networking

Summit of the Future – What Next? At the "Summit of the Future – What Next?" yesterday session, global leaders discussed how to accelerate SDG progress through enhanced financing and reforms in the international financial system. Hon. Obeth Mbuipaha Kandjoze from Namibia opened by highlighting the limitations of GDP-based country classifications, which often misrepresent middle-income nations' realities and restrict access to concessional financing. Guy Ryder, UN Under-Secretary-General, emphasized that delivering on the SDGs is a global investment and called for urgent financial reforms to ensure developing nations have a stronger voice in global institutions. Prime Minister Suminwa Tuluka of the DRC stressed the need for fair carbon credit pricing, noting that resource-rich countries like the DRC are not compensated equitably for their contributions to global climate solutions. Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé of Côte d'Ivoire added that gis country aims for 40% renewable energy by 2030, emphasizing economic diversification and green energy. The session underscored that achieving the SDGs requires financial reform, shared responsibility, and inclusive growth. As we prepare for the International Conference on Financing for Development, global efforts must ensure that no nation is left behind. #HSC2024 #MGGNetwork #ShapingFutures #ShapingFuturesNetwork #YouthEntrepreneurship #SustainableDevelopment #SDGs #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateFinance #GlobalPartnerships #FutureSummit #Africa Isaac Kodjo Atchikiti Sven Grimm Axel Berger Reon van der Merwe Mildred Neema Okwako German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) Isabelle Eberz HATIM EL OTMANI Dr. Johanna Vogel Chris Büscher Yacine N. We learned about the history of sustainable development, including its evolution, basic concepts, difficulties, and opportunities, during my first session as an SDGs Advocate. The Change: Sustainable development has developed over time, influenced by a variety of historical movements, events, and concepts that have moulded its conception and application. Among these are the following: 1. The early environmental movements (19th–20th century)Second, the Industrial Revolution (18th–19th Century) 3. The 20th-century United Nations and Environmental Awareness4. Report Brundtland (1987)5. Earth Summit (1992) and Agenda 216. The Millennium Development Objectives of 2000The Sustainable Development Goals of 2015Fundamentals: Among the SDGs' tenets are the following:1. Environmental sustainability 2. Fairness in Society 3. Economic well-being These three ideas—sometimes referred to as the "triple bottom line"—emphasize the connection and connectivity of environmental, social, and the role of economics in attaining sustainable development. Opportunities and Difficulties:The field of sustainable development faces a multitude of intricate and ever-changing challenges and opportunities that span several environmental, social, and economic dimensions. These are some of the main obstacles and chances. Difficulties I Urbanisation and overcrowding II Climate Change III Resource Depletion IV Social Inequity V Political will and governance The circular economy, innovation and technology, cooperative partnerships, green financing and investment, education and awareness, and the circular economy are among the potential. In order to overcome these obstacles and take advantage of the opportunities, global, national, and local leaders must work together with a long-term commitment to transformative action. A more just, resilient, and prosperous future for all is what sustainable development strives to achieve by combining environmental, social, and economic factors. In conclusion, the idea of sustainable development is dynamic and intricate #sdgs2030 #sdgadvocate UN SDSN Youth - Nigeria

🌍 Africa’s Green Future: Tackling Energy, Jobs, and Sustainability 🌱 During a recent podcast interview, our Director, Ciara Marie Remerscheid sat down with Watson Michael to reflect on some of the most pressing issues facing Africa in the climate and energy space: 1️⃣ Africa contributes less than 4% of global carbon emissions yet receives only 3% of global clean energy funding. Meanwhile, over 600 million people in Africa still lack access to electricity. It’s clear that we need a massive shift in global investment to match Africa’s clean energy potential and address energy poverty. 2️⃣ The International Energy Agency (IEA) & African Development Bank Group estimate that Africa needs over $199B in yearly investments by 2030 to meet its climate and energy access goals. The challenge? Mobilizing and aligning capital, improving infrastructure, and fostering public-private partnerships are critical. 3️⃣ Our research with FSD Africa predicts the creation of 3.3 million green jobs by 2030. These opportunities span renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and more, driving inclusive growth and addressing skills gaps. 4️⃣ Sustainable farming in Africa is crucial, especially as countries like Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world’s largest cocoa producers, face climate and disease challenges. Agroforestry and resilient crops will be key in securing the future of African agriculture. 5️⃣ Deforestation, gender equality, and water scarcity are deeply interconnected. Women, in particular, are often most affected by these issues. Empowering women, protecting forests, and ensuring water access are vital to sustainable development.
