OVERSLEEPING CAN BACKFIRE ‼️ In our quest for the "perfect" sleep, many of us sometimes called "sleepmaxxers", go to great lengths to optimise rest. But chasing after perfect sleep can backfire! While insomnia and poor sleep often steal the spotlight, oversleeping is a real concern too and it's often overlooked. Sleeping too much, typically more than 9 hours regularly, CAN BE AS HARMFUL AS NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP❗️ It might seem counterintuitive, but too much sleep can lead to brain fog, memory issues, and even mood swings. In terms of neuroscience, oversleeping disrupts the natural balance of neurotransmitters, particularly serotonin and dopamine, which can affect mental clarity and emotional stability. It also throws off your circadian rhythm, which can leave you feeling sluggish even after a long sleep. Hormones play a big role, too! Too much sleep can lower cortisol levels. The hormone that helps wake you up and energize you leading to a lack of focus and motivation throughout the day. Over time, this can even affect your body’s metabolism, leading to weight fluctuations and fatigue. So, what can you do? Focus on QUALITY over QUANTITY. Start by sticking to a consistent sleep schedule, aiming for 7-8 hours a night. Create a calming pre-sleep routine, like reading or meditating, and avoid screens right before bed. To wake up after 7-8 hours, set a soothing alarm or use a sunrise clock to gradually wake your body. Place your alarm across the room to force movement, and try morning light exposure to naturally reset your body’s internal clock. What are some habits that make you feel refreshed once you wake up?🤔 Comment below! P.S. I have recently been facilitating a series of sleep enhancement sessions for corporate organizations. If you're interested in offering these sessions to your team, feel free to reach out to us at corporate@outaloud.com.
