Law students, I never heard of the charge conference/jury instruction conference until after law school. Yet, in many ways, it is one of the most important parts of a trial. In terms of the law, it is the most important part of the trial. Instructions, often overlooked and misunderstood, play little role in legal education. While the casebook method focuses on appellate law, instructions, on the other hand, provide the law that the jury receives. Unlike appellate opinions, instructions are concise and present the law in a language that the jury can understand. This summer, get to court and watch an instruction conference. #lawstudents

Here's one of the most useful things I learned in law school that's not just for attorneys: This piece of advice came from my legal research and writing professor, Karen Moran, in a 1L (lawyer lingo for "first-year") Legal Research and Writing class (aka "LRW"). We were learning how to effectively research cases, and before Professor Moran turned us loose on Westlaw and Lexus Nexus--online legal research platforms--she wanted us to research cases the old fashioned way: through case law books in the library! In teaching us how to look up cases in books (which hasn't proven to be that useful; sorry Professor Moran!), she also shared this golden nugget (which has been incredibly useful): "You know you're getting close to an answer when you start seeing the same rules and principles showing up in multiple cases." This principle has been a powerful guidepost, not just in legal work, but also in my continuing education outside of the law. As you search for answers to whatever question you're studying out, you need to keep researching, studying, and learning; you'll know you're onto something when you start to confirm what your finding with multiple trusted sources. It's proven to be a great filter through which to sift out and find the tried and true principles from all the other content we process these days. #legalresearch #lrw #lawschool #research #continuingeducation
