My intervention on the waves of EXPRESS FM during our participation in the Forum International des DSI.

It was a true pleasure to extend the institutional greetings of Politecnico di Milano at the Green&Blue Festival. This event holds significant importance for us as it underscores the crucial role of the relationship between universities and industry in transforming ideas and research outcomes into innovation, fostering sustainable societal growth.   Politecnico di Milano promotes this vision through numerous projects and activities: from patenting to proof of concept (POC), from the PoliHub - Innovation Park & Startup Accelerator to the venture capital funds, and the collaboration with companies through 63 Joint Research Platforms. Moreover, the Innovation District at the Bovisa campus will be completed in the coming years, serving as a platform for innovation and a home for startups.   Despite significant progress toward fostering an entrepreneurial culture, data shows that in Italy, there is still a need to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset and culture, with only 16.3% of Italian innovative startups characterized by a predominance of young people. Therefore, it is essential to promote structured educational pathways accessible to all students to identify and enhance their entrepreneurial potential.  

I'm grateful to Luca Arnaudo for sending me an article about Téchne--the new startup accelerator and spin-off of Spoke 2 of Rome Technopole. I'm eager to learn more about initiatives such as this in Rome, as Foresight begins to establish its first-ever branch in Italy! My love of the Greek word "techne" stretches across my personal history, from growing up in the family business to studying Ancient Philosophy in college. Before I ever knew its meaning--that wonderful expression of skill that combines ART and CRAFT, from which we derive words like "technology" and "technique"--I had an implicit understanding that the work of technology transfer and commercialization required a form of both art and science in combination. This is why Foresight Science & Technology was founded as a consulting firm that used social science methodologies to address the challenges of bringing R&D out of the lab and into the market. Hard data is never enough to support successful commercialization; there needs to be a human element that cares about building the right relationships and synthesizing data into a form that allows multiple people working together to share a collaborative vision. Even as we see our work changing with new tools and opportunities provided by AI, we still understand that the root of our practice is grounded in that sense of TECHNE: the art and science of technology transfer. Similarly, our dedication at Foresight Science & Technology to craftsmanship, wisdom, and excellence is rooted in techne. It helps us to see the world not just as a problem to be solved through science, but also as a series of relationships organized around a common purpose. When we work within an ecosystem, we have to care as much about the relationships as we do the outcomes.
