The Sierra Nevada red fox (Vulpes vulpes necator) is an endangered sub-species of the Red fox. Smaller in size than most other fox species, current estimates suggest there are only 18-39 remaining in the wild. Fauna and flora write about the African elephant is the largest living land mammal and one of the world’s most iconic animals. No one coming face to face with an African elephant in the wild could fail to be awestruck by its colossal size, raw power, magnetic presence and sheer majesty. The fact that such a creature even exists should be a source of amazement. The fact that its future is in jeopardy should be a wake-up call to us all. African elephants have recently been recognised as two distinct species: savannah elephant (Loxodonta africana) and forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis). They are now categorised, respectively, as Endangered and Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. They’re intelligent. They’re family-oriented. They have great memories. They are capable of feeling a wide range of deep emotions, from intense grief to joy bordering on elation, as well as empathy and stunning self-awareness. They create complex, supportive societies much like our own. Taking into consideration all of that and much, much more, what’s not to love about elephants? Still, countless elephants are brutally killed every year for their ivory by greedy poachers who then leave their carcasses to rot in the sun. Today is Elephant Appreciation Day, the perfect time to find out more about these amazing animals and what we can do to preserve and protect them so they do not go the way of the mammoth. There are about 400,000 African elephants worldwide, and they are listed as being vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of threatened species. They are the world's largest land animals, weighing up to 22,000 pounds. With about 40,000 worldwide, the Asian elephant is listed as endangered. The eastern brown snake (Pseudonaja textilis), called the wirlu-wirlu by the Kurnu-Baakandji, has the second most toxic venom of any snake in the world. This species of brown snake can be found in both the Warreg-Darling and Gwydir Selected Areas. It's #WorldTreeKangaroo Day! Tree Kangaroos are unique marsupials that use their curved claws and long tails to climb through treetops. Logging and land clearing are major threats to these animals and are destroying their limited habitat. Out of 14 existing species, 7 are classified as Endangered or Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
