As a 1:1 and group coach, #teamcoaching is and has been the advancement in the coaching space that I know many SLT's in organizations would love/wish/hope (read invest professional development funds STAT, your people gain 30 CCEU's from this training.....) managers/people leaders could be au fait with. Why? As I reflected earlier, we can all see whether on LinkedIn, via news media, in our own organizations, that change, restructure, the impact of AI technologies, across many industry sectors is evident. Our workplace eco systems are being challenged. PwC calls this 'a shock wave in the form of a new industrial revolution, reshaping the foundations of many industries. Traditional industry classifications will need to be re-written" There is and will continue to be a deep need for our people in workplace roles to be able to pivot, re-adapt and move with necessary system shifts and process changes. Many people leaders (and these are ones who invest in themselves and come along to coach training...) ask a similar question when faced with these VUCA set of things: How can any of this be done in the best possible way when it comes to our people? As the white paper 'Building a Coaching Culture for Change Management' HCI & ICF (2018) states: "When people experience change as something that is happening to them rather than something they are integral to, they become resistant to the change. Coaching is a powerful tool; one-on-one coaching, team coaching and work group coaching with a professional coach practitioner and rated as the most helpful in achieving the goals of change management initiatives along with training, e-learning and face time with senior leaders." I want to focus on the leader as a coach. In a complex work environment, you can’t direct every decision You need team members who can think, analyze, learn, and make smart choices independently. Coaching is not: ✕ Offering advice ✕ Mentoring or training ✕ Following a lockstep process ✕ Giving employees explicit direction Instead, through coaching, you help team members develop new skills and deeper levels of self-awareness. It’s International Coaching Week! What makes coaching so special and challenging? What does it demand of me that’s different to designing and delivering leadership/management development programmes or facilitating/leading strategy sessions? Coaching is far more self-less. For starters, the agenda, wisdom and success are always the client’s. And there’s no place for bragging given that confidentiality is the bedrock AND key to creating safe spaces for learning and commitment to action. It’s thrilling to see senior and not-so-senior players, transformed by increased self-awareness and grounded confidence, push past boundaries, dare to approach situations differently, try different things. Yet coaching is challenging. Especially measuring results – part of my and Rathbone Results’ DNA AND a key expectation of the paying client. So how do I “measure” ROI in coaching assignments? Firstly, cautiously. A focus on results can detract from coaching. One client warned “Beware of spending time measuring the measurable. What’s not measurable is often more impactful.” Another said “If I keep weighing the cow, it won’t get any fatter.” 😊 Secondly, humbly. Coaching works in a very human context AND it’s the coaching client, not us, who scores the results. The boss of a coachee recently said “I admire you Cora Lynn for working in this intangible space, absolutely necessary for raising productivity, efficiency and performance.” Thirdly, indefatigably. I typically close coaching session with two questions: (1) “What’re you learning about yourself?” (2) “What’s your key take-away?” Answers often delight me – even if not as “measurable” as the strategist and chartered accountant in me would like. Some closing ~ROI quotes from coaching clients: “I know what you do for me: you help me think clearly.” CFO “You’ve helped me know that I’ve earned the right to do this job. Imposter syndrome gone. I’ve got it.” CEO “I’m talking more openly, effectively, making more effort, being more present, aware of my impact, clearer, more supportive of my people.” MD “Determined to do the right things and set clear expectations for the team – not just let things flow.” GM “I have it – a vision and clear process. The year 2024, with all its events, has come to an end. I decided to take a look back at the steps I took this year to improve. My National-Level Initiatives 1. Attempting to register an NGO called the Iran Coaching Association: Unfortunately, I haven’t succeeded yet, but I came close four times. 2. Registering beginner, professional, and advanced coaching standards with the Technical and Vocational Training Organization: This aims to bring coherence to coaching education in Iran. 3. Planning to rank and certify coaches based on ICF standards at the Industrial Management Organization. 4. Discussing with various universities to launch MBA, DBA programs and establish coaching departments. 5. Speaking with University of Tehran administrators to register the Iran Scientific Coaching Association. 6. Working to register a coaching guild with the Ministry of Labor: This is currently in progress. 7. Engaging with industrial towns and their agents to introduce coaches. 8. Implementing a scholarship program for organizational coaching, leadership coaching, and business coaching: The goal is to have one coach in every organization. 9. Translating books: Mastery in Coaching, Third Wave Cognitive Behavioral Coaching, and Becoming an ICF Credential Coach by Jonathan Passmore. 10. Translating The Powerhouse Guide to ACC, PCC, and MCC Coaching by PowerHouseCoaching and Jennifer Powers. 11. Translating Sustainable Coaching Culture by Prof. David Clutterbuck, David Megginson, and Agnieszka Bajer. 12. Translating Mentor Coaching by Clare Norman MCC. 13. Translating Emotional Intelligence Coaching by Stephen Neale, Lisa Spencer-Arnell, and Liz Wilson. 14. Designing and developing business coaching standards in the beauty industry.  My Initiatives with the Inspirational Leadership Coaching Group (ILCGroup) 1. Planning to register a Level 3 course: This course teaches the differences between Level 2 and Level 3 coaching and trains 20 psychological coaching approaches to deepen coaching practices. 2. Team building and utilizing Level 3 students: This strengthens the group and moves us toward becoming a larger organization. 3. Granting franchises in cities like Isfahan, Tabriz, Fereydunkenar, Amol, Gorgan, Zahedan, Ahvaz, and Karaj: These, along with franchises in Tehran, Shiraz, and Mashhad, help expand coaching across Iran. 4. Updating Level 1 and Level 2 materials: Preparing to renew these courses with ICF. 5. Attempting to establish a branch in Muscat, Oman: Faced some challenges here. 6. Updating materials for organizational coaching, leadership coaching, and business coaching courses. My Personal Development Efforts - Studying, translating, and updating my knowledge in coaching, mentor coaching, and supervision. - Practicing and holding coaching sessions with various approaches to demonstrate what I teach in real coaching sessions. - Striving to live a coaching-oriented life, which has led to significant personal growth.
