Today's report from Tech Talent Charter shows the tech industry has a serious problem with socioeconomic exclusion - just 9% of the workforce are from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. There is so much wrong with this stat: it means that people from working class backgrounds are locked out from well paid, highly skilled and exciting jobs; it means that products and services we all use are being designed by people with relatively narrow experience; and it means that some of the most successful companies in the UK are failing on a key aspect of social impact. It's time for the tech sector to step up. Beyond the embarrassing headline figures, the report includes lots of practical advice and resources to support action. A key resource is the Social Mobility Employer Index - we open for 2024 entries soon and we urge tech employers to get involved and show your commitment to making change.

I still remember colleagues in the workplace who joked about my accent. Being a working-class woman, + a software engineer + tech leader was a rarity. I used to put down my feelings of not belonging to 'imposter syndrome' - something I had to fix in myself. I was never the one with the problem. 🤔 UK Tech has a problem. - UK Tech has lower levels of socio-economic diversity than law and finance. - 21% of senior tech leaders are women. - One in three women are planning to leave their tech job. ➡ So what can we do? 1. Read the latest UK Tech Charter Report - https://lnkd.in/ebkB7d6p 2. Access free resources. The Tech Talent Charter, The Sutton Trust, and The Social Mobility Foundation all offer best practices including recruitment and other routes into the workplace. 3. Collect Socio-economic data - only 23% of UK Tech Talent Charter signatories are currently doing so. Not sure what to collect? Join the Tech Talent Charter for best practices. 4. Design for inclusion. To attract and retain talent - your workplace culture matters. 5. Stop trying to fix 'Imposter syndrome' in your people. Instead redesign your systems, policies, and practices for inclusion - not elitism. PS - For all those working-class kids out there 💛 Tech needs you. #TechDiversityMatters #UKTech #WomeninTech #Socioeconomic

Tech Talent Charter have released their annual Diversity in Tech report. It's based on 700+ employer submissions (including data on 230,000 tech employees across 90+ different industries). It's also got some exclusive research into #neurodiversity in tech, produced by us! We were very intrigued by the findings of our research (which was carried out among 500 UK tech workers) because more than half of those we surveyed identified as having some form of neurodivergence (such as ADHA, autism or dyslexia). This is hugely higher than the figures reported by TTC's signatories - just 3% of employees were recorded as neurodivergent (which is lower than the national average of 15-20%). This suggests that companies are not doing a good job of measuring neurodiversity in the workplace. An important factor to bear in mind is that employees might identify as having a neurodivergent condition even if they haven't received an official diagnosis. Check out the survey data here: https://lnkd.in/dzm2cDFX and access the full report here: https://hubs.la/Q02mnm8M0 #neuroinclusion #neurodiversityatwork #TechDiversityMatters #DiversityAndInclusion #DiversityInTech #UKTech
