The Blue Willow team is on site today working on another energy infrastructure scheme! Our ongoing projects of this nature require us as consultants to think holistically about the significance of a development site, especially when we are considering both built heritage and archaeological remains. Establishing impacts to views of the surrounding area are vital for these schemes, in addition to the setting and significance of any surrounding heritage assets. Of course, public benefit plays a major role in work of this nature. With this in mind, just because a proposed development might constitute less than substantial harm to a designated heritage asset does not mean the scheme is a nonstarter! Twelve historic places were recently designated as landmarks on the Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR). Among them are an early residential beachfront neighborhood associated with the development and growth of Virginia Beach; a Green Book-listed tourist home in the Commonwealth’s northern region that provided lodging for African American travelers during 20th-century segregation; and a historic district that exemplifies the settlement, agricultural, commercial, and transportation trends of Virginia’s Piedmont region. DHR will forward the documentation for these newly listed VLR sites to the National Park Service for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Listing a property in the state or national registers is honorary and sets no restrictions on what owners may do with their property. The designation is foremost an invitation to learn about and experience authentic and significant places in Virginia’s history. The main goal of this restoration was to bring back the identity of the building and to recover the rich spaces that had disappeared under the rubble. MYTHBUSTING! Listen Now. In this episode we are talking to James Wright - the Historic Buildings Mythbuster! We start off by looking into his background and how he got into building archaeology, tease a bit more out about him in terms of some of the grand buildings he's dealt with to some of the smaller historic buildings, and the lessons that he's learnt from those. We talk about some of the science involved in building archaeology, so dendrochronology what it is, how that works and how he uses that, as well as some of the other investigation techniques and the technology that's used. The historic reuse of building materials is discussed and how that can throw you off the scent of a particular building in terms of it’s age and legacy. From this we go on to talk about where to start with understanding your own building and some of the resources that homeowners can use to research their own building's history. Then, onto the myths. In particular we talk about the myth of reusing ship timbers, as well as touching on the issue of the oldest pub. And then James mentions his favourite books, including Linda Hall’s ‘Period House Fixtures & Fittings’. When we go on to talk about his favourite building, we benefit from a fantastic overview of the history of Knole House in Kent. 🏛️ The Roman aqueducts stand as a monumental achievement in the history of engineering. These incredible structures represented the pinnacle of water transport technology in the ancient world. 🌊 Over 200 aqueducts were constructed across the Roman Empire, with eleven in Rome alone. Bees, like humans, can preserve cultural traditions Different colonies build in competing architectural styles. When it comes to architectural accomplishments, humans like to think they stand at the top of the pyramid. That is to underestimate the astonishing achievements of social insects: termites raise skyscraping nests and honeybees fashion mesmerisingly geometric combs. The true master builders of the insect world, however, are the hundreds of species of stingless bee, native to the tropics and subtropics, which weave combs of unparalleled variety and intricacy inside hollow tree trunks or other cavities. Now a group of evolutionary biologists led by Viviana Di Pietro at ku Leuven, in Belgium, reports that, like humans, these tiny-brained creatures are capable of building according to different architectural traditions which are then handed down over generations.

CALL FOR SESSIONS - The Society of Architectural Historians announces that its 79th Annual International Conference will take place in Mexico City from Wednesday, April 15 to Sunday April 19, 2026. This event marks the first time the conference will be held in Mexico. The Society invites everyone interested in the history of the built environment to submit a proposal to chair a session at the conference. The deadline to submit a proposal is January 9, 2025. Sessions may be theoretical, methodological, thematic, interdisciplinary, pedagogical, revisionist or documentary in premise and have broadly conceived or more narrowly focused subjects. Sessions that embrace cross-cultural and transnational topics are particularly welcome. Session proposals that focus on Mexico City, Mexico, and Central America, in particular, are encouraged. They may address critical issues in architecture in any period or topics that intersect architecture with archeology, environmental studies, landscape design, and art history.
