One of the critical outcomes of this partnership is the enhanced capability to track, detect, and manage the vast number of objects in space, from satellites to space debris. Developed through collaborative workshops during Clean Space Days 2023, Zero Debris Week, Clean Space Days 2024, and bilateral meetings across the space sector, it outlines solutions and tools for implementing all the principles set forth in the charter. Whilst the Zero Debris Technical Booklet is non-binding, it provides a clear and first-of-its-kind direction for the space community to follow, in order to reach #ZeroDebris. The EPFL Space Center was actively involved in the discussions leading up to this document's first version. We gathered valuable opinions from the Swiss industry and ensured that the #SwissSustainableSpace community was represented in the Booklet's development. 🚀 FROM COLD WAR TO DYNAMIC SPACE OPERATIONS 🛰️ Today, I was at the Space Mobility Conference & Expo, part of Space Week here in Orlando. The wide range of topics covered the strategy and integration of the United States Space Force and the broader commercial space industry. The landscape of space operations has undergone a remarkable transformation across three distinct ages. 👉 Space Age 1.0: The Cold War Era: When space programs focused idealogical battle with the Soviet Union, with little overlap between civil, commercial, and national security sectors 👉 Space Age 2.0: Post-Cold War: When there was significant international collaboration, integration of Russian technology into US launch vehicles for “assured access to space”, civil space activities centered around routine low Earth orbit travel (e.g., space shuttle), and there were no perceived threats in the space domain. 👉 Space Age 3.0: Since 2015, we've witnessed a revolutionary period marked by SpaceX's innovations in reusable launch technology and an unprecedented convergence of civil, commercial, and national security sectors. This era has ushered in "dynamic space operations," emphasizing on-orbit logistics infrastructure for more responsive space capabilities. * COMMERCIAL INNOVATION MEETS NATIONAL SECURITY * A robust and competitive commercial space industry has become crucial for driving innovation, reducing costs, and meeting national security requirements but faces several key challenges and opportunities: 🚀 Launch Vehicle Capacity: There's a pressing need for new launch service providers and reduced barriers for emerging companies ⚠️ Supply Chain Security: The industry must address supply chain security threats, including resources (such as titanium), and space cybersecurity (such as "white labeling" practices, espionage, industrial equipment vulnerabilities) * RECOMMENDATIONS FOR INDUSTRY GROWTH * To maintain U.S. leadership in space, various panelists suggested the following: 🤝 Acquisition Reform: Implementation of multi-year service contracts and commercial solutions for government space operations 🛰️ Technology Development: Creating clear pathways from testing to full production, addressing the "valley of death" gap that often hampers innovation 💰 Funding Diversity: Establishing partnerships across private, local, state, and federal levels (think: who should own and fund spaceports!) The future of commercial space operations hinges on balancing innovation with security, while maintaining the agility to respond to emerging opportunities and challenges. Meanwhile, from a Space Force perspective, military needs are essential, even over efficiency and cost-effectiveness when developing space mobility solutions. 👉 NET OUT: As we continue to evolve, the industry must focus on resilience, sustainable growth, and fostering an environment that encourages calculated risk-taking and innovation. #EolasWatch

Attending the #AbuDhabiSpaceDebate (#ADSD2024) on December 9-10, 2024, at the Erth Hotel Grounds was an extraordinary experience that offered invaluable insights into the current challenges and future opportunities in the space sector. The event, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, was a prestigious gathering of global thought leaders from government, academia, and industry. The welcoming remarks by HE Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, UAE Minister of Sports and Chairman of the UAE Space Agency, set the tone for the event, emphasizing the UAE's leadership in advancing space exploration and fostering international collaboration. As a participant, I felt privileged to be part of such a high-level dialogue aimed at addressing space's most pressing issues, including sustainability, security, and accessibility. The themes of the #ADSD event were both timely and critical for the space industry’s long-term development. The discussions around Space Sustainability highlighted the urgent need to safeguard the space environment for future generations. One of the key topics was debris mitigation, which discussed various strategies to reduce space junk and prevent collisions in increasingly crowded orbits. As part of the discussion on responsible conduct in space, there was a strong emphasis on international cooperation and developing norms to govern space activities. The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the POLSA Polska Agencja Kosmiczna | Polish Space Agency have signed an agreement for cooperation on the peaceful uses of outer space at the Sheraton Manila Hotel, Pasay on 05 December 2024. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between PhilSA and POLSA covers the following areas of cooperation: Earth Observation (EO) and remote sensing; space science and exploration of outer space; promotion of space industry; promotion of space education through various academic activities for areas focusing on space science technology applications (SSTA); and other areas of cooperation that may be mutually decided upon by both Agencies. Excited to share our latest piece of research on space ecosystems and “Pathways to Space”. In collaboration with ISPI - Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale and Edoardo Mancini Oxford Space Initiative we explore a multi-dimensional approach to collaboration using as a case of analysis two mature space-faring nations, #Italy and the #UAE. Key insight is that by using an #ecosystem view and performing multi-dimension analyses we can identify a multitide of avenues of collaboration, beyond technology transfer.
