What steps can be taken to address challenges of #opportunity in #engineering? The new episode of NAE’s Diversity Dialogues explores how to get more talent into engineering programs and build the capability and confidence of new engineers. NAE member and host Wanda Sigur speaks with Nicole Smith, Georgetown University, and NAE member Raphael Bras, Georgia Institute of Technology, to discuss opportunities in engineering and why the outcomes of the United States and the world economy depend on future engineering talent. The 2024 Conference on Systems Engineering Research (CSER) wraps its final day today. We've been blown away by the depth and innovation of the research presented, the insightful discussions held, and the connections forged between researchers from around the globe. Share pictures from your 2024 CSER experience with hashtag #CSER2024! #INCOSE #CSER2024 #SystemsEngineering #Research
At CSER (conference for systems engineering research) in Tucson. Of course the first two people I see are Dr. Alejandro Salado and Jon Wade. #incose #systemsengineering

“It was only when the graduate committee became more diverse that the graduate student population became more diverse… Having a more diverse committee brought better results in terms of who was admitted.” Gilda Barabino (NAE), president of the Franklin W. 📣 The results are in and the PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN 📣 ... No, this is NOT another USA election post. You've seen enough of those already. This post is about the results of my poll: ** Would you attend a workshop or webinar on envisioning decolonial science and engineering? ** 95% of you said YES even though I didn't propose an event design 🤣 But I noticed the following: ** Many of you shared personal stories of colonial patterns in science and engineering education ** So now I'm wondering: what about an event where we simply talk about our experiences learning science and engineering? 🔲 Which folks were portrayed as founders of technical disciplines? (Were they all Wh.te men?) 🔲 Which use cases were taught? E.g. military, civil, etc. 🔲 How were "logic," "reason," and "rationality" discussed? 🔲 How were the histories of those disciplines taught... if at all? 🔲 How were the social contexts of those disciplines discussed... if at all? The above is simply my idea. 🪴 If you were to attend a FREE, ONLINE, 1-hour event on "decolonial science and engineering," what would YOU want to see? 🪴 ✍ LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW ✍ TAG A FRIEND ✍ SEND ME A MESSAGE

As #engineers worldwide work to solve complex problems, overlapping objectives can cause unintended tensions. While these tensions can result in conflicting interests and goals, discussing them can lead to comprehensive solutions. The NAE collaborated with the University of California, Davis, to encourage inclusive discussions on #engineering solutions at the 2024 NAE Regional Meeting on "Tensions at the Edge: Competing Objectives in Engineering Solutions to Society’s Most Pressing Problems." Thank you so much for sharing this, Sandra Kaemmer ! My dad Norbert Kaemmer was always one of the most important role models for me. I had the privilege of seeing him in action at work during my internships at Emerson in Belgium and the US, I really remember the respect and appreciation that so many people had for him as a leader and as a mechanical engineer. At home, I have to be honest, as a teenager, I did not always have that same respect and appreciation during these long physics lessons over a meal or a drive about why certain things work the way they do: from why it takes longer to boil an egg in Bogota than in Aachen, which way to put on the toilet paper roll to reduce friction, why the shower curtain pulls towards you. But, even back then, I felt great pride and comfort knowing that “probably Papa (dad) would know” why something is the way it is. I think he wanted his sons to become engineers (he would not admit), but that wish was not fulfilled :-) Maybe Sebastian Kaemmer and myself made a bit up for it, by joining very engineering focused industries and organizations. I remember, when I joined Vestas in 2009, my dad, also an avid sailor, said that if he had my age, the wind industry would be where he would want to be. Now he has his book published - The Egg Boiling Problem/ Das Spiegelei im Hoehenrausch - a composition of every day physics explanations featuring some of the Emerson VP Engineering entry exam questions, Sandra mentions below. One of the problems in his book was inspired by Vestas is about what happens if you put a wind turbine on a boat to power the propeller. Get a copy to find the answer :-) https://lnkd.in/g6YPttvG
The egg boiling problem/ Das Spiegelei im Höhenrausch A bit more of a personal message. In 2015 my father-in-law Docter Norbert Kaemmer retired after a long and succesful career in Engineering. Having heard many stories about the unofficial #Emerson (climate technologies) VP engineering club and their ‘entry exam’ I listened very carefully to all these challenges that he and is friends thought of and it is safe to say that I would not have made the club. 🤪 In 2016 Norbert wrote some of the problems down in English for friends and family and this year the book was published in German by Hanser Verlag. I find it incredible cool that these stories made it to print! So if you like to challenge your mind (and read German)go get yourself a copy! https://lnkd.in/eR5uBgrS Sebastian Kaemmer Jan Daniel Kaemmer

Tyree Mitchell, PhD, Associate Professor at SHLRD, and Changwon Son, PhD, CSP, Assistant Professor of Industrial, Manufacturing & Systems Engineering at Texas Tech University, will serve as co-principal investigators on a grant totaling $855,760 to conduct groundbreaking research titled "Empowering and Enhancing Offshore Workers’ SWA, UWA, Reporting Unsafe Conditions, and Employee Participation." The project seeks to address challenges faced by offshore workers in implementing critical safety protocols by investigating the effects of leadership and organizational factors that contribute to offshore energy workers’ perceptions that they are empowered to and safe to stop work when they notice conditions are unsafe.
