We are so honored to share that our Founder and CEO, Deryl McKissack, was recently featured in CNBC’s #HowIMadeIt series. She shared how she took $1,000, an old projector and determination to grow McKissack and McKissack into an AEC industry leader. Today, we manage over $15 billion in projects and employ over 150 diverse, skilled experts in our DC, Chicago, Baltimore, Dallas, and Los Angeles offices. But there is still more work to be done. Did you know that fewer than 2% of U.S. architects and 3% of U.S. designers currently identify as Black across the entire AEC industry? Supporting diversity and inclusion means more innovation, lessening our labor shortage, and a better experience for everyone. That’s why diversity, equity, and inclusion are a cornerstone of our business. Thank you to CNBC, Ashton Jackson, and Eric Clark for this wonderful feature! Nauright, J., & Catsam, D. (2021). At the forefront of racial tolerance? African Americans and high school football in Iowa in the 1930s. Sport in Society, 24(5), 748-759. ABSTRACT: In the upper Midwest, at least until the late 1930s, there was a modest presence of black athletes in American football and track and field, with a smaller number in basketball and other sports. We know a great deal about how the post-war desegregation in professional baseball and football began to slowly change the landscape of elite American sports. But despite this overarching national narrative of small numbers of black athletes in integrated sports in the North and segregated structures in the South, we still know very little about specific contexts, especially at the high school level where the vast majority of organized sporting competition is held in the USA Key questions remain: was there a qualitative difference between the treatment of African-American athletes in different regions of the United States during the first four decades of the twentieth century? Was there a difference in racial attitudes in places where African Americans were resident in small numbers such as in the towns and medium-sized cities of the upper Midwest? Indeed, Iowa was regarded as relatively welcoming of African American athletes by the 1930s whether that reputation was fully deserved or not. In this article, we examine this question from a case study point of view. KEYWORDS: Race relations, American football, Iowa, diversity

U.S. State – Wisconsin What do you see? Housing one of the largest collections of historic locomotives and rail artifacts in the country – the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay preserves the rich legacy of America’s railroads. Over the next 50 days, I’ll be sharing a series of posters, each distilling the essence of a U.S. state into a minimalistic design. My goal is to strip away the unnecessary and focus on the core of what each state represents – to me. What do you think represents this state?

Thank you to Atlantic Business Magazine for recognizing the impact and importance of continuing to celebrate women in business. Many people do not realize that the advertising industry continues to be male dominated in senior leadership positions. It makes me tremendously proud to accept this award for the amazing growth our agency has had. I share this honor with my female business partner Susan Clarke and all the female leaders at m5 (btw, 75% of our manager level and above employees are women and that is double the industry average). We have proven that putting women in leadership positions brings diversity, creativity, collaboration, and empathy to the workplace. And we have shown that you can do that and be successful in business. This International Women’s Day I am reflecting on the great conversations I have been part of the last few days. Here is a quick summary of key nuggets of advice I have heard: Take up space. Your ideas and thoughts have value. Share them confidently. Share them with a smile. Be your true self. Don’t hide parts of yourself or your personality. Be authentic. Be vulnerable. This should not be misunderstood as not being professional. Shake off the fear. You are going to be afraid, there is no way to avoid that. But learn and practice putting that fear aside. Allow room for people to grow and change. This is the goal in life, so give others that benefit as well. Be kind. Always. Full stop. Laugh often and deep. Find a career, workplace, colleges, friends that you can laugh with. I didn’t hear this, but I felt it. Lots of laughing this week and it reminded me what a privilege it is to have that in my life at work and at home.
From research to executive VP, Heather Dalton's career with m5 the agency has been on a constant upward trajectory. Congratulations to Heather on being named one of Atlantic Canada’s #25MostPowerful #WomenInBusiness. Photo: David Howells

🌍 Today I was in Manchester for productive meetings with trusted partners and friends (Steve Crystal and L S Lowry pictured). We delved into the latest global fraud trends, and our discussion was not only insightful, but also a testament to the power of trusted and positive collaborations. In an era where challenges are increasingly complex and interconnected, the value of working with dependable partners cannot be overstated. Sharing ideas and solutions with those who share our commitment to integrity and innovation makes us stronger and more resilient. Together, we can tackle the toughest problems, drive meaningful change, and create a safer, more secure world. Here's to the power of collaboration! 💪✨ #Collaboration #Innovation #TrustedPartners #FraudPrevention #GlobalTrends
With a keen eye for detail, and a passion for people and the streets: L.S.Lowry, as astute as they come. One of the original architects of today’s counter-fraud practitioners perhaps? Good to get inspiration from the man himself as Gareth Davies and I focused on global fraud challenges in Manchester today. The art of collaboration.
