🌍 Reflecting on Our Rural Electrification Project in Kenya ⚡ Last year, my team and I had the incredible opportunity to work on a Rural Electrification Project in Kalobeyei, Kenya. Our mission was to bring accessible, reliable, clean, and affordable energy to a village that previously relied on kerosene, diesel, and biomass for power. By designing an off-grid hybrid electricity system using renewable sources like solar, wind, and biomass, we aimed to uplift a community of 700 households, schools, and local businesses. 📊 Key Outcomes: • Established a community-owned energy cooperative for sustainable maintenance. • Introduced a progressive tariff system to ensure fairness and long-term affordability. • Reduced harmful biomass usage by promoting clean cooking methods and energy-efficient solutions. • Empowered local technicians and entrepreneurs through training and education, fostering local economic growth. Reflecting on this project reminds me of the power of engineering and collaboration to create lasting positive change. Huge thanks to my talented colleagues Felix, Jasper, Alessio, Dilay, and John Daniel Williams, who contributed to this incredible effort. How USAID Mobilised Over $1 Million for Clean Energy Investments in Laos 💡 USAID's Clean Energy Innovation Fund (CEIF), part of the Laos Energy Security (LES) initiative, has mobilised over $1 million in investments to advance renewable energy projects in Laos. Through matching grants of up to $250,000, local entrepreneurs have been empowered to develop innovative clean energy technologies, including solar-powered irrigation systems, boosting Laos' solar generation capacity by at least 100 kW. These projects have not only contributed to reducing energy costs but also to the reduction of 300,000 tCO2e of greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels and increasing the use of clean energy in off-grid areas, USAID is helping Laos meet its climate goals and strengthen energy security. In addition to direct investment, CEIF has enhanced the financial skills of local businesses, enabling them to plan and manage clean energy projects effectively. Public-private partnerships fostered by USAID have also accelerated the adoption of renewable energy across multiple sectors in Laos. USAID's work through CEIF is driving Laos towards a more sustainable energy future, promoting innovation, and supporting the country's long-term growth in clean energy. Swedfund and IFU have invested $44 million in Sturdee Energy to boost renewable energy in Southern Africa and reduce reliance on coal. With projects across Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa, Sturdee aims to generate over 600 GWh annually and cut CO2 emissions by nearly 500,000 tons. This investment aligns with climate goals and ensures strong social and environmental standards.

Africa has marked a milestone in sustainable cooling ❄️ with the installation of its “first” #propane (R290)-based chiller for air-conditioning in Ghana, according to a statement from the Green Cooling Initiative (GCI)🌿, a program operated by Germany’s main development agency GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH). The 115kW (32TR)-capacity unit has a total charge of 8kg across two refrigeration circuits.
