𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐄𝐍𝐕𝐈𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐀 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐎𝐅 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇! 12th Dec. 2024: NEMA’s Executive Director Dr. Barirega Akankwasah, PhD made the communication during an engagement with the media fraternity on environment management in Uganda. During the engagement, at Hotel 360 in Ndejje, Wakiso District, The Executive Director of NEMA said the environment is interlinked with all sectors of our livelihood such as agriculture, tourism, fisheries, mining, industries, energy etc. Dr. Akankwasah also added that NEMA can’t manage the environment alone, media and the general public involvement is crucial because Uganda’s economy highly depends on a sustainable environment. Destroying the environment means destroying the economy, livelihood and life as a whole. Backfilling a wetland is ignorance and Ugandans should adopt sustainable agricultural practices so that Agriculture does not compete with the environment. Of the forest cover Uganda has lost, 80% has gone to Agriculture. Therefore no one will be allowed to replace forest with Agriculture. Furthermore, following president’s directive on wetlands usage in the country, only Kigezi, Bukedi and Busoga are currently allowed to continue using the as alternative means are derived. The rest of the population living in wetlands must evacuate peacefully or face persecution. #savetheenvironment #saveourwetlands #sustainabledevelopment
