National Institute of Minority Economic Development’s Post

We mourn the loss of former Greensboro Mayor Yvonne Johnson, a true trailblazer and inspiration to many. Her legacy of leadership, service, and commitment to building a stronger community will live on. Yvonne Johnson was a friend and supporter of the Institute for over 30 years. As a council member and Greensboro's first Black mayor, she was a champion and exemplified the ideals of the Institute - building the asset base of diverse populations. She was a special champion of ours, being a graduate of Bennett College, the alma mater of our founder, Andrea Harris. They were friends and fierce supporters of each other. Her passing impacts me personally because I've known her most of my life and grew up with her kids. Greensboro and our broader North Carolina community have truly lost a trailblazer and giant of a leader. Her impact on Greensboro and North Carolina is immeasurable. Please join us in honoring her memory and celebrating her life. Kevin J.
