We mourn the loss of former Greensboro Mayor Yvonne Johnson, a true trailblazer and inspiration to many. Her legacy of leadership, service, and commitment to building a stronger community will live on. Yvonne Johnson was a friend and supporter of the Institute for over 30 years. As a council member and Greensboro's first Black mayor, she was a champion and exemplified the ideals of the Institute - building the asset base of diverse populations. She was a special champion of ours, being a graduate of Bennett College, the alma mater of our founder, Andrea Harris. They were friends and fierce supporters of each other. Her passing impacts me personally because I've known her most of my life and grew up with her kids. Greensboro and our broader North Carolina community have truly lost a trailblazer and giant of a leader. Her impact on Greensboro and North Carolina is immeasurable. Please join us in honoring her memory and celebrating her life. Kevin J. TODAY IS #GIVINGTUESDAY! As we enter our 39th year, we are honoring Andrea Harris and those individuals who made the Institute their life’s work through the creation of the Institute’s LEGACY FUND. This special fund will ensure that the mission set forth by the late Andrea Harris and her peers will be carried forward by the Institute indefinitely - and that we will continue to be present, walking side-by-side with future women and minority leaders in small business pursuits across our growing circle of impact. The Institute’s Board has set a goal of $1,000,000 by our 40th Anniversary in July of 2026. Your support will get us one step closer to that target. To give a one-time gift, or sign up as a recurring donor, and help us meet our goal, visit https://lnkd.in/eTJkYQmF We are so grateful to continue to fulfill and serve the original mission of Dr. Harris when she created the Institute, and even more grateful for your support. Downtown Durham, Inc. (DDI) is researching a one-year Retail Incubator Program to support minority- and women-owned businesses in establishing a downtown presence. This program will provide affordable retail space, hands-on business coaching, and access to funding opportunities, including grants up to $25,000 and low-interest loans. The survey and interest form will help DDI ensure the program addresses the needs of small business owners, including industry-specific challenges, space requirements, and areas of support. Please complete the survey if your business is located in Downtown Durham and is a retail-based business. Link in bio or visit https://lnkd.in/eSttpdfJ

On July 31st, 1986, Andrea Harris, Lew Myers, Nathan Garrett, James Polk, and Julian Brown founded the North Carolina Institute of Minority Economic Development (Institute). Harris and her colleagues would spend the next 30 years standing up for the elderly, fighting for affordable housing, eliminating barriers, and assisting minorities, women, and small businesses to gain access to economic opportunities. Through their vision, the Institute has touched more than 120,000 women and minority owned small businesses across our footprint as well as HBCUs, affordable housing and community development initiatives, and so much more… The mission set forth by our Legacy Leaders remains clear: To level the playing field for diverse populations through advocacy, education, and economic opportunities. In 2026 the Institute will celebrate 40 years. The Institute’s Board has set a goal of $1,000,000 by our 40th Anniversary in July of 2026. Your support will get us one step closer to that target. Working side by side with Dr. Andrea Harris in the fight for wealth equity in NC was another key trailblazer: Dr. Abdul SM Rasheed. Friends since kindergarten, the two became icons in creating economic opportunity for communities of color. From affordable housing to creating opportunities for diverse small businesses, Drs. Rasheed and Harris were behind some of the biggest economic advances for women and minorities since the dissolution of Black neighborhoods the 1950s. Dr. Rasheed, for decades, led the iconic North Carolina Community Development Initiative (Initiative), which merged with the Institute in 2020. In 2023, the Institute dedicated a state-of-the-art entrepreneur training hub in north Raleigh to Rasheed. This building now serves as the home for our Center for Entrepreneurship and the Entrepreneur Learning Lab. As we continue to pay tribute to the Legacy of Drs. Harris, Rasheed, and other legends, we invite you to be among the first to support the Institute’s Legacy Fund. I had a good conversation with the 🇺🇸 National Institute of Minority Economic Development (NIMED) to discuss concrete steps to strengthen the connection between minority American businesses and the Tanzanian business community.
