It's #bannedbookweek--an especially important week to authors! But we know we should be talking about the need for readers to have access to diverse books ALL YEAR LONG. Here's a little script we developed at TheCaseMade to help folks think about how to talk about book bans by appealing to shared aspirations. And I encourage folks to also think about how stories get silenced long before they become books. If we don't diversify publishing and help readers see that there are many different ways to tell a good story, too many important tales will continue to go untold.
Here at TheCaseMade, we’re lovers of books and storytelling. So, in honor of #bannedbooksweek, we're sharing our case for making diverse stories available to kids at school, in their community libraries, and at home. Feel free to borrow our language to make your own case for reading banned books and keeping books on library shelves! And please share your favorite banned books in the comments. Thanks to American Library Association for the graphic!

To help keep challenged books on shelves, Unite Against Book Bans created Book Résumés, a free resource to support librarians, educators, and community advocates. Find summaries, reviews, and information about how a title has been successfully retained in school libraries. "They detail each title’s significance and educational value and are easy to share with administrators, book review committees, elected officials, and board members." I read Banned Books! My classroom library was filled with picture and chapter books that have appeared on the banned list and some of my 4-year-old's favorites are on it as well. While I don't actively seek out banned books, as an avid reader who loves learning about new topics, people, and cultures, it just so happens that many of my preferred titles are on the list. It makes me wonder, 📚 If research tells us that positive representation boosts student engagement, how can we ensure welcoming spaces where all learners feel seen? 📚 What do we stand to lose with book bans? 📚 How will book censorship affect other aspects of school & home life? Are any of your recent reads on this list? Will you celebrate Banned Books Week? If so, how and with what books?

my latest article in the The Morning Journal. this is interesting and it made think about the books in our school libraries. Not that old books are necessarily bad. Some may also have concerns with which books some schools are filling their libraries with. So, if this is something of interest to you, here's that story: https://lnkd.in/gWFEieYF
