In October, Vermont Electric Cooperative (VEC) kicked off its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) deployment, a major step toward smarter grid management for nearly 33,000 members across eight counties. Partnering with NRTC and Itron, Inc., VEC will modernize 40,633 meters over 2,880 miles of line and 2,056 square miles. This initiative aligns with VEC’s commitment to providing efficient, reliable, and innovative service to its members. System acceptance testing is set to begin in early 2025. Here’s to building a smarter, more resilient grid for Vermont! BREAKING NEWS: The Cardinal-Hickory Creek Transmission line was energized on September 26. The line will carry clean energy across the Midwest, improving grid reliability and helping states reach their clean energy goals. Thirteen years ago, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) assembled a portfolio of 17 high-voltage transmission lines titled Multi-Value Projects (MVP). Cardinal-Hickory Creek was the final MVP line to be energized. At CGA, we are thrilled to see over a decade's worth of work come to fruition, but 13 years is too long to build this crucial infrastructure. As we look toward future transmission projects, like MISO's Tranche 1 portfolio, we will continue to advocate for upgraded transmission across the Midwest. I appreciate pv magazine USA publishing this article about my presentation on flexible interconnection at last week's Southeastern Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (SEARUC) conference, which I hope those not in attendance might find informative (link below). One point I especially appreciate the reporter (Will Driscoll) capturing: "'Flexible interconnection could reduce the burden on a utility too,' Norris said. 'We already have a lot of other transmission and network upgrades going on for other reasons,' he said, and 'layering more and more' upgrades for particular projects puts 'more burden on already strained utility construction teams and planning teams.'" It's also important to underscore that some projects may be able to avoid significant network upgrades with low or even de minimis curtailment rates, depending on the specific system conditions that were identified as responsible for triggering the upgrades - which may be very low probability. If anyone is interested in my presentation deck from the conference, please don't hesitate to ask and I'll gladly share! https://lnkd.in/eepH3B-3

Thrilled to support Guidehouse’s most recent installment of the State and Future of the Power Industry report. Now in its ninth year, this year’s corresponding pulse survey of over 400 utility executives found that resilience is top of mind across the industry. Faced with more frequent and increasingly destructive climate-related weather events and an aging grid, it’s no surprise that executives are eying risk mitigation strategies across their organizational footprint. Fortunately, the ecosystem of innovative technologies is rapidly expanding, but utilities will need to remain proactive in engaging state and local partners, regulators, and other key stakeholders to advance solutions that fully capitalize on the Energy Transition. To learn more about how your organization can take advantage of digitalization, decarbonization, and decentralization trends across the power sector, be sure to check out the report below!

Happening now at the 1EnergyWorld 2024 Global Energy Conference, the session "Charging Infrastructure Deployment" is officially kicking off Day 2 of this groundbreaking event. Taking place today, April 25, from 9:00 am to 9:30 am US ET, this virtual session is led by Matthew Stephens-Rich, Director of Technical Services at the Electrification Coalition. In this pivotal discussion, Matt Stephens-Rich explores the critical aspects and strategic implementations of EV charging infrastructure across various landscapes. As the push towards electric vehicles gains momentum, establishing robust and accessible charging networks is essential to support this transition. Stephens-Rich will address the technological, logistical, and policy challenges involved in deploying these infrastructures efficiently and at scale. This session is particularly crucial for stakeholders involved in urban planning, transportation policy, and energy management. Attendees will gain insights into the latest developments in charging technology, strategies for overcoming infrastructure bottlenecks, and the role of government and private sectors in facilitating a seamless integration into existing transportation networks. The momentum behind the industry's shift towards Integrated System Planning is electric ⚡⚡⚡Having worked in transmission planning for much of my career, it's clear that our planning processes need to evolve to address the growing interdependencies between transmission, generation, distribution and DER/customer programs. ISP is a necessary step to facilitate this coordination and to ensure that we are making investments in our power system in the right locations at the right time. Check out our latest whitepaper on ISP below and reach out if you want to chat ISP - we have lots of thoughts!
We’ve spent decades thinking about what makes for a great power system planning process and are excited to see momentum developing around Integrated System Plans (ISPs), a pioneering effort that integrates generation, transmission, distribution, and customer/DER planning in a single holistic process. We are excited to announce today the release of a new whitepaper, sharing E3’s vision for developing an ISP. It’s informed by our work supporting Salt River Project in developing their industry-leading ISP, in addition to our decades supporting related processes with a variety of stakeholders: resource and transmission planning with utilities, economy-wide electricity planning with state agencies, and DER and customer program evaluation with program administrators, among much else. The paper, developed by an interdisciplinary team across E3, shares a clear roadmap as well as three case studies and can be downloaded here: https://lnkd.in/gycT3J5G We're happy to discuss – reach out to Lakshmi Alagappan and Arne Olson.
