📰 An excellent article from Nina Lockwood, Founder and CEO of Intuitive Talent Solutions, in this month's issue of Passenger Transport. Nina uses the data from the NSAR Rail Workforce Survey 2024 to illustrate the urgency of addressing skills shortages in the UK rail industry. She also makes valuable suggestions on how the industry can tackle these challenges and build skills. 👏 👉 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/eZ2CrEgd 👉 Read the NSAR Rail Workforce Survey 2024: https://lnkd.in/eBRFvxXJ

UK rail is still a male dominated industry – 84% of the workforce are men (NSAR 2023). The percentage of women in rail is up five percentage points (from 11% in 2016 to 16% in 2024) which is a promising trend, but many benefits of a diverse industry are still left on the table. Digging a layer deeper into the data, we find that there are huge demographic differences between role types. Women make up over 40% of business management roles, while accounting for just over 5% of Civils & Structures, or Electrification & Plant positions (NSAR 2023). At the same time, UK rail continues to face protracted skills shortages, all while losing talented staff to other sectors every single day. We believe that drawing new skills from other sectors – from construction to military, commercial and more – is key to driving vitality in our workforce. This diversity isn’t just good for equal opportunity among individuals, but will drive productivity and resilience across the board. Adaptation and flexibility is needed in order to draw from fresh, quality resource pools – much of which are comprised of skilled female workers. WCL is dedicated to tackling the major issues facing UK and global rail, and we recognise the link between talent acquisition/retention and the success of critical national infrastructure. 👉 Are we missing out on talent due to rigid, outdated recruitment criteria? 👉 How can growing organisations build their understanding of parallel industries and the transferable skills they offer rail? 👉 How can we further develop recruitment strategies to draw from a wider pool and bring fresh blood into the rail sector? 👉 Are there further opportunities for job shares, part-time working, and hybrid working to help rail remain attractive against competing industries? 👉 Are potential leaders in rail being lost during recruitment processes which need reform? These are the questions WCL is working hard on during this critical period of transition for the rail industry. What do you think about increasing gender diversity in the UK rail workforce? #rail #UKrail #diversity #recruitment #infrastructure (image credit NSAR, 2024)

The public transport sector is the cornerstone of urban mobility, connecting people to each other and to opportunities, while promoting environmental sustainability and supporting economic growth. As a major employer, it also has the potential to make decent work a core pillar of decarbonisation. However, the growing challenge of a global workforce shortage threatens the future of reliable and efficient public transport systems. To address these challenges, the International Association of Public Transport UITP, in collaboration with the International Transport Workers Federation, has launched the Global Employment Data for Public Transport project, a global survey which aims to gather vital data on employment trends across the sector. https://lnkd.in/ezrikrxe

I have some good news to share! I am honoured to be a featured speaker at the upcoming @World Employment Confederation WEConversations webinar event coming up on 10 October at 2 pm CEST. I will be speaking on a panel that will discuss what the global economy and labour markets will look like moving into 2025. Many of our remarks will draw on our own personal experiences alongside priorities identified in the WEC Q3 2024 Labour Market Strategic Insights report published earlier this week. WEC findings show that the global labour market is facing several challenges, with agency work activity remaining strained due to negative turnover growth in many countries, despite some stabilisation in hours worked. Job vacancy rates and labour shortages are easing, although in some sectors they are still strong. The discussion will be moderated by Shazia Ejaz, Director of Campaigns & Research, Recruitment & Employment Confederation. Check out the full invite here: https://lnkd.in/dPMfpMCa Don't miss out and secure your spot now! Our Senior VP Michael Stull reflects on the Kings Speech following on from our recent change in government. 🗯️ Manpower are a constant in our research to ensure that our market insights & data will support both our clients & consultants within their specialist markets. Most recently, our studies have identified that eight in ten UK employers still aren’t able to find workers with the skills they need. 📈 If you are one of these employers struggling to fill skill gaps in your business, or you are looking to futureproof your workforce with updated skills, then let’s arrange a good time to discuss how our specialist engineering and supply chain divisions, along with our UK wide branch network can support your needs. 👀 Contact details in comments🙌🏼 #manpowerengineering #Manpowersupplychain #futureskills
ManpowerGroup has long been calling for a #peoplefirst approach to securing future prosperity for our country. And since the General Election, the new government under PM Sir Keir Starmer has introduced ambitious policies to improve workers' rights, increase employment and reform skills training. With current skills shortages and rising unemployment, this emphasis on workforce resilience is welcome. But the devil is in the detail and now is the time to roll up our sleeves and get to work together.
