Last week the NNY community received insights from restaurant CPG brands that all companies should know. Here are some key points from our panelists from our first 'Restaurant + Retail' event presented by Helbraun Levey - 🕜 Dario (Tacombi) - think long term. It's not un-common for a business to take more years than you would hope to establish itself and reach a level of maturity where it can consistently generate cash and become self sufficient. 🛒 Kiernan (Deep Indian Kitchen) - to succeed in conventional grocery, you need to know your data in order to tell a good data story and make sure you can perform, because if you get discontinued, you may not get another shot for years. 👤 marguerite (Momofuku) - don’t force consumer behavior when it comes to finding your brand (DTC vs retail). If they want to buy your product on amazon, they’ll buy it on amazon. What drives wine retail sales? 🍷🍷 Width of label selection? Coverage of different regions and countries? Hidden gems? Price discounts and deals? Staff behaviour and knowledge levels? Store design and layout? A mix of all of these? The ingredients mix might vary in proportion but the retailers may need a leaf from the hospitality playbook in providing a memorable experience for everyone walking through that door. While sourcing today has become less difficult, thanks to the advancement in logistics and supply chain, understanding the customer's taste profile, the unique occasion that drives somebody to walk into a store and make them feel at home will always win in the long run. A small sale today could mean multiple cases and infinite referrals in the future. I personally prefer to buy from businesses that don't judge me for my lack of knowledge in a certain subject matter and would behave the same if I spent a couple of dollars or when feeling indulgent. Walmart is launching a premium private label tier – bettergoods – to offer trendy, chef inspired items at the accessible price points Consumers expect from Walmart. In an interesting strategy twist, the +300 items in the line will have no direct national brand competitor, instead focusing on bringing Walmart Shoppers an expanded offering of culinary inspired tastes, plant-based offerings and “made without” options in categories like frozen, dairy, snacks, beverages & more. The move appears to be a way to draw higher income shoppers from Costco, Whole Foods & Trader Joe’s – retailers known for their rotating selections and in-store discovery experiences. The bettergoods launch is also a way to tidy up the Walmart private label portfolio because they’ll be eliminating the Sam’s Choice product line altogether and pivoting those SKUs into Great Value, bettergoods or full discontinuation. Personally, I’m skeptical that the presence of these premium offerings on Walmart shelves will be enough to lure higher income shoppers because Walmart will still lack the more intimate and experiential shopping environment that those winning in the super premium grocery space can provide. This is big time. Walmart just announced a #privatelabel lined called “Bettergoods” described as an “elevated experience that delivers quality, unique, chef-inspired food at an incredible value”. This isn’t your run of the mill #PrivateLabel brand (which already have hit record growth numbers in recent years and represent 20.7% of #grocery industry unit sales today).
