🌊Ireland receives EU funding to expand marine protected areas🌿 An investment of €233m to fund 12 European environmental and #climate projects was announced by the European Commission on 22 February 2024. As part of the EU’s long-term LIFE Programme, #Ireland is to receive €15.14m of funding to expand and enforce a network of #marine protected areas (MPAs) with its waters. Maroš Šefčovič, Executive Vice-President for European Green Deal, Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight said: “The LIFE programme is a concrete example where EU funding successfully helps restore our nature and ecosystems and face climate change by cutting emissions and becoming more resilient. With these twelve projects, 10 EU countries will progress on those efforts on the ground and support the implementation of the EU environmental and climate legislation.” Due to start in July 2024 the project’s parties, The Department of House, Local Government and Heritage, the University of Cork, the University of Galway and University College Dublin will be working closely marine Irish marine stakeholders and citizens. The use of participatory Ecosystem-based Management will include co-design, co-production and co-delivery, to establish the network and achieve the project’s goals. The project is to conclude by June 2033. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e8gvqJaG #MPA #MarineProtectedArea #MarineNetwork #MarineConservation #MarineManagement

Am I missing something? Are we working to solve environmental crises or developing technology for economic benefit from environmental decline? 2018 on contract with the OECS Commission, I conducted a situational and stakeholder analysis as precursor to develop a "Regional Strategic Framework and Social Assessment for the Caribbean Regional Oceanscape Project. The process involved workshops and consultations with stakeholders across all Member States and whose views, concerns and recommendations are integrated into the report. Each State lamented the growing negative impacts of sargassum blooms on the nearshore coastal environment, what most believe is a tipping point of the rapid decline in the health of our marine ecosystems and fueled by land based sources of pollution. Six years later there has been no or little progress in implementation of the protocols of the decades old Cartegena Convention particularly those focused on land-based sources of marine pollution. It seems that the strategy is one-sided, turning sargassum into an economic resource with no action to stem the environmental decline. Yet the Blue Economy is high on the agenda as the next frontier for sustainable development. So will there be any development of critical infrastructure for environmental management to include wastewater treatment plants, control of agriculture and watershed management, or has the crisis reached a point of no return? Why is the emphasis innovation and technology for utilizing sargassum and none for pollution control? Soon we will stop eating fish and bathing in the ocean! Caribbean tourism can say good bye as well! Why is it so difficult to invest in managing our wastes and watersheds? Everyone is chasing the hype about innovation and technology! What am I missing? Live Well VJ #sargassum #sustainabletourism #enviromentalprotection #oecs

I'm thrilled to share the culmination of our comprehensive research on the impact of oil and gas platforms in the North Sea. Our study, titled "Oil and Gas Platforms in the North Sea: Do They Benefit Commercial Fish Species and Biodiversity?" aims to shed light on the environmental effects of these structures. 🌍 🌊 ♻ Collaborating with a diverse team of experts, we've analysed the ecological balance, investigating both the benefits and the drawbacks these platforms may present to the marine life they coexist with. I invite you to delve into our findings on how offshore industry and environmental stewardship can coexist. We're looking forward to hearing the insights learned from the discussions at the Institute of the Americas' webinar on the 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞-𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, in which MIS MD, Dominic McKnight Hardy, is participating tomorrow. The webinar represents a pivotal platform for industry leaders, environmental advocates, and stakeholders to converge on strategies that drive significant environmental change across marine terminals. Demand for terminal facilities is at an all-time high. Coupled with a growing industry demand for more efficient and sustainable operations, the challenges faced by terminal operators are increasing in number and complexity. Supporting the entire vessel call lifecycle, from scheduling and compatibility analysis to cargo transfer monitoring and reporting, MIS Marine 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 understands and addresses vessel call challenges. 👉 Nature Positive Offshore Wind is a working group for Norwegian Offshore Wind (NOW) − an arena where industry and research organizations meet and discuss what nature positivity really means and how to build an offshore wind industry that can contribute to a nature positive future. The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) has the lead of the working group which consists of members of NOW and had its first physical meeting this week. − It is critical that efforts to mitigate climate change and biodiversity loss are accelerated. Offshore wind activities that safeguard biodiversity will be an important piece in that puzzle, says Chief Development Officer in NIVA, Solrun Figenschau Skjellum. − We are moving in the right direction, but there are still many hurdles to cross in terms of understanding the biodiversity impacts of offshore wind in Norway, developing solutions to avoid, minimize, restore and offset impacts, as well as measuring what has been done.
