About us
The State Scientific Research Institute Nature Research Centre (NRC) was established on 31 December 2009 under the Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania (Official Gazette, No. 158-7186, 2009) by merging the Institute of Botany, the Institute of Ecology of Vilnius University and the Institute of Geology and Geography. The research potential and the experimental basis of the three institutes were integrated to create an up-to-date scientific research infrastructure for investigations into present-day and past ecosystems, as well as studies and development of environmental protection technologies. Upholding 70-year-old traditions and experience, the newly established NRC not only pursues and co-ordinates long-term scientific research in various fields of biotic and abiotic nature and ensures the competence of Lithuania on the international stage, but also takes an active role in the development and implementation of a conceptual framework for the protection of the living environment and its sustainable development, as well as disseminating scientific knowledge of biotic and abiotic environment, thus contributing to the development of the knowledge economy and education of society. In co-operation with representatives of business, government and society, the Nature Research Centre conducts contracted scientific research and experimental development work, rendering recommendations concerning research methodology, etc.

🌊✨ Exciting News from the Nature Research Centre! ✨🌊 We are thrilled to announce that Nature Research Centre has officially joined the SUBMARINER Network for Blue Growth EEIG, a registered non-profit European Economic Interest Group (EEIG) that unites diverse organizations from the Baltic Sea region and beyond. 🌍💼 The SUBMARINER Network connects research and educational institutions, business support organizations, government agencies, private enterprises, and civil society, integrating regional perspectives into international systems. It actively contributes to the implementation of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) and showcases the blue economy at a transnational level as the Horizon Europe Blue Mission Banos Project example. With over 50 member organizations—including 13 full members and 39 associate members—the network covers nine key areas where our researchers can significantly contribute, such as: algae cultivation; sustainable aquaculture and fisheries; multifunctional use of water bodies; protected marine areas, and more. During the recent General Assembly event, the impressive achievements of SUBMARINER members over the past decade, including 37 projects with a total budget exceeding €140 million, and a remarkable website reach of over 1 million views were highlighted! 📊🎉 NCR visit, October 1-2, aimed to introduce our organization to the network’s founders and members, fostering collaborations for future project activities and joining Horizon Europe projects. Our presentation titled “Nature Research Centre Lithuania: Who are we? What do we do?” was delivered by Julija Baniukevic and Judita Koreiviene, where the collaboration opportunities were explored! Congratulations to the SUBMARINER Network comes from Vilnius! We wish you many successful projects ahead! 🚀🌊 Thank you to all the organizers who were behind the scenes: Angela Schindler-Daniels; Efthalia Arvaniti; Ferdi Bulmer and all the team of Submariner secretariat! It was an amazing experience!!!!💛 💚❤️ #NatureResearchCentre #SUBMARINER #MarineSustainability #Collaboration #BlueEconomy

🌊⚓ Exciting news from our first BaltWreck project conference on "Preventing Massive Marine Waters Chemical Pollution from the Leaking Wrecks and Munitions/Weapon Dumps in the South Baltic"! 🛳️🔩 On September 17-18 the conference was held in Gdańsk, Poland aimed to launch a transformative three-year project dedicated to addressing the pressing environmental challenges posed by sunken vessels and munitions in the Baltic Sea. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the harm these remnants cause to the delicate ecosystems and biodiversity of our marine environments. Nature Research Centre Ecotoxicology Laboratory scientists, Dr. Milda Stankevičiūtė and Dr. Janina Pažusienė delivered a compelling talk on the "Biological Effects of CWAs: Towards an Improved Assessment of Chemical Pollution in the Baltic Sea," emphasizing the impact of buried chemical weapons on aquatic life and the importance of integrating biological-chemical monitoring to assess environmental pollution. Stay tuned for more updates on our work to protect marine ecosystems! 🌍💧 #BALTWRECK #MarineConservation #BalticSea #EnvironmentalProtection #SustainableFuture #ChemicalPollution #Ecotoxicology #Collaboration #Biodiversity #OceanHealth #NRC

🌍🔬✨ **Better Together: A Milestone in Biodiversity Genomics!** Scientists from 33 European countries have joined forces to generate reference genomes that celebrate our continent's rich biodiversity. The ERGA - European Reference Genome Atlas Pilot Project has successfully produced high-quality reference genomes for 98 species, paving the way for a new model of inclusive and equitable biodiversity genomics. The members of the ERGA council representing #Lithuania are scientists of the Nature Research Centre, dr. Laima Baltrûnaitë and dr. Vaidas Palinauskas. The scientists contributed to the pilot genomic project, together with their colleagues from Poland offering to sequence the genome of one of the most protected bird species in Europe, aquatic warbler Acrocephalus paludicola. These species are included in the Lithuanian Red Book and in the list of strictly protected animal, plant and mushroom species of the Republic of Lithuania. 🔗 🌍 Check out the press release for more details: https://lnkd.in/eT_ebTCX 📚 Explore the full collection of #ERGAPilot papers in this new collection: https://lnkd.in/euCfYeVz This groundbreaking initiative highlights the power of collaboration, enabling researchers to address challenges and share invaluable insights. From chromosome-level genome assemblies in Greece to the sequencing of critically protected species like the aquatic warbler, ERGA is setting new standards for global biodiversity conservation. As we continue to unlock the potential of genomic data, ERGA is not only enhancing our understanding of biodiversity but also fostering sustainable practices for the future. Together, we can ensure that genomic resources are accessible to all, regardless of borders! 🌱🌊 Join us in celebrating this remarkable achievement and the bright future it heralds for biodiversity genomics! #Biodiversity #Genomics #ERGA #Collaboration #Sustainability
