The Greater Ukuwela Nature Reserve (GUNR) is a vibrant corridor for some of South Africa’s most iconic wildlife. Among these species is the Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), known for being the world’s tallest animal. Did you know that male Giraffes, also known as bulls, can measure up to 5.7m in height? 🦒 Suffering from a fragmented population, subpopulations of giraffes can be found across different parts of Africa, with some subspecies numbering fewer than 1,000 individuals. Its main threats consist of habitat loss due to deforestation, agricultural expansion, and unsustainable harvesting. However, at the GUNR, giraffes are thriving! And their population continues to grow - with the exciting news of two more new baby giraffes born on Ukuwela since December 2023. It's incredible to see new life flourish on the reserve, witnessing the results of our partner Wild Tomorrow's conservation and habitat restoration efforts first-hand. Our Connecting Ukuwela appeal will expand the GUNR through the purchase of Sisonke farm, providing a safe bridge between the east and west sections of the GUNR, and giving wildlife, like giraffes, more room to roam. As wildlife populations decline, the traditional hunting practices of indigenous communities in Arunachal Pradesh hold vital lessons. Ancient taboos, once regulating hunting to sustain wildlife, are now fading with modernization. But could these cultural practices offer key insights for conservation today? Deep Gogoi, a Doctoral Fellow at CWS, is researching the impact of these hunting taboos on wildlife and biodiversity. His work aims to provide evidence on whether these age-old practices have contributed to sustainability. By blending ecological knowledge with cultural traditions, Deep's research seeks to show how ancestral knowledge can inform modern conservation efforts. # Haast’s Eagle: The OG Sky Boss We Gotta Learn From 🦅 Yo, LinkedIn fam! Let’s talk about one of the most badass birds to ever take flight—**Haast’s Eagle**. This wasn’t just your average bird of prey. Nah, this bad boy (or girl) was *massive*, weighing up to 33 pounds and claiming the title of **the largest eagle ever**. If you were chilling in New Zealand back in the day and looked up, you’d probably see this beast circling like a freaking jet. Its prey? None other than the **moa**, a giant, flightless bird. For centuries, Haast’s Eagle ruled the skies of New Zealand’s South Island, swooping down on moa like it was nobody’s business. But then, around 1300, the Māori people rolled in, and everything flipped. The moa got hunted down to extinction, and with their main food source gone, Haast’s Eagle was next on the extinction block. By 1400, this sky king was history. Now, here’s the thing, fam: **We can’t keep letting history repeat itself.** The Haast’s Eagle didn’t just disappear—it was a chain reaction, humans overhunting the moa and messing with the balance. We gotta take care of our animal friends before we lose more species to our own mistakes. **Why it matters today:** We’re seeing the same kinda patterns now. Whether it’s deforestation, overfishing, or climate change, animals are losing their habitats and food sources left and right. If we don’t step up, more species are gonna go the way of Haast’s Eagle—gone forever. So what can we do? Start small—support conservation efforts, cut down on waste, donate to wildlife organizations, and keep the convo going. Happy World Elephant Day! 🐘 Today (August 12th), we celebrate Elephants, the largest terrestrial animal living today. Did you know that each year, an estimated 20,000* African elephants are illegally killed for their tusks, and it's not just the poachers threatening the future of elephants. African elephant habitats have declined by over 50% since 1979, and Asian elephants are now found in just 15% of their original range. This loss of space increases the chances of elephants entering farmers' fields, damaging crops, and harming people. Other factors that contribute to habitat loss include the conversion of forests for agriculture, livestock farming, human infrastructure, commercial logging, plantations for biofuels, extractive industries, poverty, armed conflict, and displacement of people. It's not hard to see why the African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) is classified as Endangered. The LIFE Elephant Heritage Area is situated in over 90,000 acres of luscious protected rainforest near the border between Thailand and Myanmar. Living In the Forest with Elephants (LIFE) is dedicated to preserving the magnificent forest and caring for the rescued elephants that call it home. This #NationalWildlifeDay, let's talk about one of Nevada’s most fascinating and vulnerable residents: the Pygmy Rabbit. 🐇🐇🐇 These little critters, the smallest rabbits in North America, are more than just adorable. They play a key role in our sagebrush ecosystems, but they’re facing some serious challenges. In the last 40 years, Nevada has lost over 9 million acres of sagebrush habitat to wildfires. 🔥😢 This is bad news for the Pygmy Rabbit, who relies on sagebrush for food and shelter. With threats like habitat loss, climate change, and industrial activities on the rise, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is now considering federal protection for these tiny heroes under the Endangered Species Act. 🌱 At the May Arboretum Society, we are committed to supporting the protection of wildlife and their habitats within the May Arboretum. The gardens are home to a diverse array of plants and animals, including some of these Pygmy Rabbits. 🙋♀️ Want to help? I spy with my little eye, something that is... TINY!⁠ ⁠ Elise and Jag, WPC's Taylor's checkerspot butterfly technicians, were on their surveys last week and managed to spot a couple of Taylor's checkerspot larva out in the landscape.⁠ ⁠ ⁠ Only a couple of millimetres long, these little larvae will eventually grow into adult butterflies, adding to the wild population WPC is helping to build.⁠ ⁠ The team identified 9 different matrilines (9 unique lineages of female ancestors) and collected 120 caterpillars from the field for raising in the lab. By collecting these endangered larva, we ensure their transition to adulthood is safe and they can be released once they are old enough to do so... where they can lay their own larva next year!⁠ ⁠ ⁠Were you able to see the tiny larva? 🐛 More about the Taylor's checkerspot program:⁠ ⁠The Taylor's checkerspot butterfly is listed as endangered in Canada, and considered a keystone species. An environmental indicator for the health of the entire ecosystem, this special butterfly was once widespread in the San Juan Islands, southern Vancouver Island and the surrounding islands of British Columbia. It was believed to have disappeared from Canada until 2005, when 15 checkerspots were observed on Denman Island in B.C.'s Gulf Islands. Since then WPC has been working to support the butterfly by building the wild population in B.C. through conservation breeding and helping partner efforts that restore and maintain habitat for the species.

Five wild cat species are listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List, with many more subspecies and subpopulations at the brink of extinction. Habitat and biodiversity loss continue to accelerate, and poaching and human-cat conflict remain constant threats to wild cats' survival.
