We are thrilled to share that Fundación Jocotoco has been awarded a $1 million grant from the Indianapolis Zoo as part of the Saving Species Challenge! Selected from 52 action plans submitted by organizations worldwide, this grant will significantly enhance our efforts to protect the Critically Endangered Blue-throated Hillstar, an endemic hummingbird in southern Ecuador. The Blue-throated Hillstar was first discovered in 2017. Current estimates suggest that only 80-110 individuals remain. The species’ geographical range is only 62 square km (24 square miles). Its high elevation páramo habitat is highly fragmented and is threatened by overgrazing, frequent burning, and pine plantations. To protect its habitat, we established the Cerro de Arcos Reserve in 2020 with the support of American Bird Conservancy Rainforest Trust Basel Zoo. The reserve now spans more than 600 ha (1,500 acres). With support from the Indianapolis Zoo, we will work closely with local communities to ensure the hummingbird’s survival and expand the reserve. Thanks, Indianápolis Zoo, for this award! Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gfkZcvkM PC: Murray Cooper
