Following TUI Group’s AGM last week, I have written to the Supervisory Board to express my deep disappointment with their response to our question on their new animal welfare policy. While TUI states that their policy for cetaceans prohibits breeding for commercial purposes, they continue to sell tickets to venues like Loro Parque, which has just announced the pregnancy of Morgan, a female orca. Despite being pregnant, Morgan is still made to perform for visitors; an undeniable example of wildlife exploitation for entertainment. This blatant contradiction exposes TUI’s failure to uphold its own animal welfare standards. Join me in calling on TUI to stop profiting from wildlife exploitation and take real action to end their support for captive dolphin and orca entertainment. We have sent a letter to the government, signed by over 50 charities, legal academics, scientists and celebrities, calling on the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to revise its position regarding the welfare of crustaceans at the time of killing and to acknowledge that boiling these animals alive is contrary to the law. The Chamber of Deputies approved today Bill 2950/2019, authored by Senator Wellington Fagundes (PL-MT), which establishes general rules for the protection of animals in disaster situations. The bill, which returned to the Federal Senate in the last vote, represents a historic milestone for animal protection in Brazil, being the first to specifically address the rescue and care of animals in emergency situations. Natália Sant'Anna de Figueiredo, our Public Policy Manager, declares that the approval of this project is a big step for civil society. "For the first time, we have legislation that not only recognizes the fundamental role of animal protection organizations, but also establishes clear responsibilities for states, municipalities and companies in the care of fauna, traditionally made invisible in disaster situations. Exploitation of a tiger to the point that his eyes had to be removed as a result of tourist camera flashes. Yet another example of how we commidify wild animals for our own selfish wants. The effects of Firmin’s life as a show animal in Spain are heartbreaking and have resulted in him losing his eyes.   "Around the world, thousands of animals are bred in captivity in horrific conditions and used for tourist entertainment. Avoid any venue or event that allows you to touch, ride, wash or have a photoshoot with a wild animal."
