A recent study from the European Commission revealed that over half of the green claims by companies in the European Union were either vague, misleading, or completely unsubstantiated. Now, the Council of the European Union has taken a significant step to protect consumers against greenwashing and deceptive advertising with its newly-adopted directive. This directive bans unverified claims like “environmentally friendly” and “biodegradable”, and only allows sustainability labels backed by official certification schemes. Pierre-Yves Dermagne, Belgian politician, stated that this directive will allow consumers to be “better informed, better protected, and better equipped to be real actors of the green transition. ”Notably, this directive also puts a stop to claims implying a neutral, reduced, or positive environmental impact through carbon offsets. Why does this matter to us at Wren, as an organization with carbon offset projects in our portfolio? For years, we’ve highlighted issues in the carbon offsets industry. At their best, carbon offsets are a transformative funding mechanism, enabling anyone to send money around the world to the highest impact climate solutions. But many projects fall short—either greenwashing dirty business practices or failing to have the impact they promise. This directive helps to address our long-standing concerns, promoting transparency and trust in the industry. At Wren, we focus on finding the best carbon offset, carbon removal, and climate projects out there, evaluating initiatives against 100+ criteria to determine their social, ecological, and harm-reduction benefits. We’re thrilled to see an increased rigor for sustainability claims. The recent $9.25M #Oatly settlement for greenwashing serves as a reminder that it’s more important than ever for firms to be ethical and well-considered in their actions. Navigating regulatory changes can be overwhelming. If you’re unsure about your sustainability strategy, flick me a message and we’ll jump on a call to shape your game plan. Companies Risk Greenwashing Through Trade Associations (Report) Is it “greenwashing” if a company with ambitious environmental objectives fails to reconsider or disclose their affiliations with trade groups that actively lobby against climate goals and decarbonization policies? Planet Tracker revealed how corporates signed up to the Climate Action 100+ initiative remain members of trade associations which they state are routinely "misaligned" with the Paris Agreement. The report revealed corporates publicly committed to meeting Net Zero are members of trade associations such as the National Association of Manufacturers - NAM, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM), which they state stand accused of lobbying against a range of net zero policies. CERES Group found just 8% of companies on the S&P100 Index proactively assess their trade associations' climate policies. Unilever said the company planned to publish a climate policy engagement review which would analyze its industry associations' alignment with its climate policy priorities. As consumer, investor, and regulatory demands for climate and sustainability disclosures grow, companies must ensure their disclosures are accurate and verifiable. Misleading claims about being environmentally friendly, or "greenwashing," can damage brand trust and exaggerate the environmental impact more than they actually provide. 🔗 Read the full article by Husch Blackwell's Robert Joseph to learn how businesses can avoid greenwashing claims: https://lnkd.in/gqab_baV

❗ Important update on the EU Green Claims Directive! On June 17, the EU Council agreed a new 'general approach' to the Green Claims Directive to combat greenwashing on B2C environmental claims. This approach will now guide negotiations with the EU Parliament. 👉 UK businesses selling to the EU: If your business falls within the scope of this directive, it is essential to ensure that your sustainability claims are clear, accurate, and verifiable. Key highlights: ✔ Evidence-Based Claims: Must use the latest scientific evidence, be clear, and specific. ✔ Verification: Independent third-party checks required, with additional support for SMEs. ✔ Public Labels: Recognised local/regional labels might skip third-party checks. ✔ Climate Claims: Must report detailed carbon credit info and distinguish between contribution and offset claims.
