💬📝 “Europe is waking up to the fact that our soils need attention,” says Mark Anthony, a fungal ecologist from Switzerland. This awareness has spurred the European Commission to prioritize soil health, creating an EU-wide Soil Mission alongside other key challenges like climate adaptation and cancer research. Since 2021, the mission’s actions include: 🌍 Funding R&D for soil quality 🔬 Establishing 100+ living labs to co-create practical solutions 📊 Developing a Europe-wide soil monitoring framework The Soil Monitoring Law proposal aims to bring structure to soil health efforts by standardising criteria like erosion and contamination tracking. While critics see room for improvement, many view it as a first step towards binding soil health policies across Europe. The law could require Member States to set up soil sampling within four years, driving both knowledge and action. Want to learn more about #soilhealth? The LEEBio™ process developed by BioEB is a biorefining technology that maximizes the use of lignocellulosic biomass, efficiently separating and upgrading its main components—cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin—while also addressing sustainable soil health and nutrient recycling. It is designed to return essential nutrients to the soil from which the biomass was harvested. This feature enhances soil regeneration and reduces the reliance on industrial fertilizers and chemical pesticides, which are significant GHGs. By promoting the cultivation of miscanthus x giganteus, known for its low maintenance requirements and soil-protective properties, the LEEBio™ system allows for long-term soil fertility and reduced agricultural emissions. Miscanthus cultivation minimizes the need for tilling, fertilizers, and pesticides, thus preserving soil structure, supporting organic matter accumulation, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional agriculture. This process facilitates decarbonization but also promotes agroecological practices, aligning with BioEB’s goals for climate-resilient and ecologically sound bioproducts. more info : https://lnkd.in/ewdPj9Bg

🌍 Urgent Action Needed to Reverse Soil Degradation in Europe! A joint EU Science, Research and Innovation (JRC) [ 👏 ] and European Environment Agency report on #Soil was launched today at the EU Soil Observatory Stakeholder Forum. A big thanks to all the authors especially the #SoilGuru that is Rainer Baritz. The 2024 State of Soils in Europe report assesses the state of soil degradation across the EU and other countries in the European Economic Area, including Ukraine, Türkiye, and the Western Balkans. The report shows alarming status and trends, with soil degradation getting much worse in recent years, and highlights the need for immediate action to reverse this trend. Soil degradation threatens our competitiveness, food security, agricultural productivity, biodiversity, and resilience to extreme weather events and climate change. Joint efforts at EU, national, and local level focus on restoring soil health. Key messages: -soil erosion is estimated to amount to 1 billion tonnes per year across the EU. -24% of EU soils are affected by water erosion, mainly in cropland, with projections referring to a possible increase of 13-25% by 2050. -Tillage erosion (the mechanical agitation of soil), can have a significant. impact on cultivated fields. -50% of peatlands in the EU are now estimated to be degraded. -62 % of our soils are degraded Some #SoilFacts -95% of global food production relies on soil. -soils with sufficient organic matter can hold up to 10-20 times their weight in water But there’s hope! Through coordinated efforts like the EU Soil Observatory and upcoming Soil Monitoring Law, Europe is taking significant steps toward restoring soil health and ensuring a sustainable future. 🌱 #SoilHealth #Sustainability #ClimateAction #EUEnvironmentalPolicy #SoilRestoration Download it here:
