🚀 Exciting Milestone Alert in Sustainable Waterway Transport! 🚀 We recently celebrated a significant milestone in the NOVIMOVE - smart & sustainable waterways project, a visionary initiative funded by the European Commission aimed at revolutionizing the inland waterway transport sector. This project underscores our commitment to fostering a resilient and sustainable transportation ecosystem in the face of climate change. 🌍 Climate change presents unprecedented challenges for the inland shipping industry, notably the extreme fluctuations in water levels. Our ability to navigate these changes is crucial for maintaining the vital role of inland waterways in our transport sector. 🔍 NOVIMOVE partner DST - Development Centre for Ship Technology and Transport Systems has meticulously explored several potential adaptations. Through a series of validations, they have developed a promising solution in a controlled lab environment: Extractable Sideboxes. This innovation provides extra buoyancy to ships when and where needed, showcasing our proactive approach towards a future marked by uncertainty. 🎥 Dive into the details with an explanatory video, captured by Erwin van der Linden using his inseparable Nikon Z8, from every conceivable angle - yes, even from the bottom of the basin! 👏 A huge round of applause for DST's development team Sophie-E. Martens, Benjamin Friedhoff and their colleagues, is in order. Achieving airtight chambers was no small feat. The question now is, will we see this design navigating our waterways in the near future? It ultimately depends on its business case, weighing the extra weight of the construction against its economic impact under critical conditions. 🗓️ Mark your calendars! The NOVIMOVE project's final conference is set for May 28 in Gorinchem. We are eager to share our results and discuss the implementation of these innovative ideas with you. Funded by the Horizon H2020 Programme of the European Union under grant agreement No 858508 Join us in pushing the boundaries of what's possible for a smart and sustainable future in waterway transport. #NOVIMOVE #SustainableTransport #Innovation #ClimateResilience #Waterways

“Solutions that are inspired and supported by nature, which are cost-effective, simultaneously provide environmental, social, and economic benefits and help build resilience. Such solutions bring more, and more diverse, nature and natural features and processes into cities, landscapes, and seascapes, through locally adapted, resource-efficient and systemic interventions. Nature-based solutions must therefore benefit biodiversity and support the delivery of a range of ecosystem service”(European Commission, 2022).

🌿 Exciting Update from the BARCOVE Project Team 🌿 This week, we had the privilege of meeting with the Board of Advisory for the BARCOVE project. It was an invaluable opportunity to report on our significant milestones and achievements throughout 2023. Among the highlights were the successful hosting of the BlueGreen innovation challenge, the creation of universal forms and descriptions accessible to all for initiating applied research, and the detailed discussions on the four one-to-one cases starting for development in 2024. In Spain, we’re exploring biodiversity measurement on green roofs, investigating the differences in biodiversity between intensive and extensive green systems. In the Netherlands, our focus shifts to water dynamics – one case examines the measurement of water flow, temperature, and management of water volume, while another delves into irrigation methods for a 1ha movable forest. Denmark will see us innovating in rainwater utilization, aiming to harness rainwater pressure without external pumps for urban greening. Moreover, we shared our ongoing efforts to compile a “recipe book” and educational materials that will emerge from these one-to-one cases. This work is fundamental to spreading knowledge and empowering further applied research in our community. The meeting concluded with a forward-looking dialogue about the challenges we face and how the Board of Advisory can provide support. We discussed the importance of collaboration, innovation, and shared vision in overcoming these hurdles. We invite our professional network to stay tuned for updates as we continue to push the boundaries of environmental research and sustainable practices. Your insights and support are crucial to our journey towards a greener, more sustainable future. #BARCOVEProject #Sustainability #Innovation #EnvironmentalResearch #GreenRoofs #WaterManagement #AppliedResearch Funded by the European Union. 💭🐝Did you know that climate stress makes it harder for bees to track floral scents? Animal-based pollination contributes to 35% of global food production yet 1 in 6 bee species are regionally extinct. Climate stress has damaged the composition of floral resources in plants such as nectar and pollen, resulting in colony collapses. During Moonshot Pirates' Shape the Future Challenge, Elanu Karakus, Mariam Elshahawy, Kateryna Chechotka and I developed an artificial flower to help increase flower-bee interaction. 🌸 We realized that by increasing a plant’s original floral scent, even in a synthetic way, we can increase this interaction thus increasing pollination and triggering the flower’s response to produce nectar and supporting bee nutrition. By initiating this self-reinforcing cycle, we can significantly improve pollination rates, support bee health, and ultimately, secure our agricultural future. 💡Want to know about our idea? Check out Aeifloria's profile on the Moonshot Pirates voting platform! https://lnkd.in/dGJ4wrRV
