On this day in 1934, The University of São Paulo (USP), one of Brazil's foremost institutions of higher education and research, was established. Located in São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil, USP has grown to become a pivotal center for academic excellence in Latin America. Its foundation marked a significant milestone in the development of Brazilian education, science, and culture. USP was created with the aim of providing Brazil with a modern and progressive university, capable of driving both scientific and cultural advancements. Do you know how USP's financing works? Universidade de São Paulo, Universidade Estadual de Campinas and UNESP - Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" are the three universities in the state of São Paulo and receive a fixed percentage of the Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS) collected by the state government: 5.02%, 2.19% and 2.34% respectively. In this sense, the university budget varies according to the economic situation of the state and the country, but does not depend on strategic or ideological alignment with the executive and legislative branches, protecting the principle of university autonomy, described in Article 207 of the Federal Constitution. Administrative autonomy makes the public university an autarchy, a type of entity created by the state to provide services of interest to society. USP is among the 0.6% best universities in the world, according to the 2024 edition of the ranking prepared by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), a consultancy in the United Arab Emirates, which evaluated 20,966 institutions. USP was ranked 117th and, although it dropped eight positions compared to last year's ranking, it continues to be the best-rated institution in Ibero-America.

Great news: six Bachelor programmes of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) have been labelled 'top programme' in the 2025 Dutch Choice Guide (Keuzegids) by Dutch students, esp. in the fields of environment and sustainability: Medicine, Liberal Arts & Sciences, Earth Sciences, Biology, Creative Technology and Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE). Students ranked content, lecturers, testing methods, preparation, career opportunities and atmosphere. In addition, the interdisciplinary approach of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) is highly appreciated.
