https://lnkd.in/eiEqbaeQ My new essay: Justice, Cooperation, and the Collapse of Social Systems As observed by the French Revolution, social cooperation can also break down when society's sense of justice is eroded. This is clarified by cooperation researchers Yuval Harari and Robert Axelrod.

My copy made it home! My chapter "Neither Revolutionary Nor Co-opted" discusses the political strategies that men and women from the informal city of Cartagena put into practice to build and improve their communities during the transformative years of the National Front. It argues that citizens allied with multiple actors across the political spectrum to meet their aims. Neither revolutionary nor co-opted, they did not side with any of the contending ideologies during the Cold War but showed a dynamic understanding of politics and democracy. The chapter is part of "Histories of Solitude," a two-volume book written by an avant-garde group of historians put together by Lino Brito and A. Ricardo López-Pedreros that covers a wide set of topics of the history of the Colombian republican period.

The Springer Global Encyclopedia of Territory Rights published my entry on Elinor Ostrom and common-pool resources. It's a comprehensive overview of the political theory and economics of "Governing the Commons" which, in the spirit of Elinor Ostrom, is also applied to thinking about public policy (specifically territory rights in international waters). Is it a fair punishment or should it be abolished once and for all? Read all about it now! Here's a little sneak peek! Today, I would like to introduce you to the legal topic of Capital Punishment. We will delve deep into the trenches of capital crimes, capital offences, and capital felonies, and explore the world of Judicial Murder, which is the intentional and premeditated killing of an innocent person by means of capital punishment. For example, the executions following the show trials in the Soviet Union during the Great Purge of 1936–1938 were an instrument of political repression. A very illuminating read. Helps to understand what is and has been going on in US politics (and society) a lot - especially shedding light on underlying dynamics and developments. Especially enlightening: the partisanship that exists these days, and how it came about. By Steven Levitski and Daniel Ziblatt. First published in 2018 - still very relevant.
