A very illuminating read. Helps to understand what is and has been going on in US politics (and society) a lot - especially shedding light on underlying dynamics and developments. Especially enlightening: the partisanship that exists these days, and how it came about.
By Steven Levitski and Daniel Ziblatt. First published in 2018 - still very relevant.
In my latest Substack post, I deal with the nature of lying in American politics. How does dishonesty affect our democracy? I invite you to reflect on this pressing issue with me. Read on here: https://lnkd.in/gDWeWyPX#USpolitics#USHistory#AmericanPolitics

THE NATURE OF CONTEMPORARY POLITICS.
Contemporary politics is the systematic and continuous struggle and scheming to manipulate the desires of men in order to influence both their mind, brain and senses such as to gain power and authority; for the purpose to control their resources,in the interest of self, associates and probably the general public; and also continuous quest to retain power and authority, remain in power and excercise authority for the same purpose; and manipulate another election to further perpetuity self and lieutenants in power for the similar purpose, ad infinitum!

I met with Ido Aharoni Aronoff at Tel Aviv University to discuss the roles of emotions and morality in politics, the roots of polarization, the crisis of liberal democracy, and what we can do to bring about political and social change.

Post truth Politics - a viable threat to democracy-
In the contemporary realm of post truth politics, the true ideals of democracy is challenged by the manipulation of truth , and the erosion of trust in institutions.
A major collection of essays that questions whether contemporary capitalism will end with a bang or a whimper—from a leading political economist and the author of Buying Time.
After years of ill health, capitalism is now in a critical condition. Growth has given way to stagnation; inequality is leading to instability; and confidence in the money economy has all but evaporated.
In How Will Capitalism End?, the acclaimed analyst of contemporary politics and economics Wolfgang Streeck argues that the world is about to change. The marriage between democracy and capitalism, ill-suited partners brought together in the shadow of World War II, is coming to an end. The regulatory institutions that once restrained the financial sector’s excesses have collapsed and, after the final victory of capitalism at the end of the Cold War, there is no political agency capable of rolling back the liberalization of the markets.
Ours has become a world defined by declining growth, oligarchic rule, a shrinking public sphere, institutional corruption and international anarchy, and no cure to these ills is at hand.
How might postliberalism change the Conservative party? Do new laws on protest go too far? And are boroughs politically aligned with UK government being rewarded with more funding?

3.2.4 Marxism
Marx started from the notion that human subjectivity is an active material force carried by individual consciousness but rooted in the responding body, which in turn enmeshed in the culture and relationships of social reality of which it is part. Therefore, Marxism starts from the view that the key activity is the production of the substance of the people of the world. It is the use value of products, the food and water, the clothing and shelter, the reproduction of children through sex, upbringing and education, the maintenance of health and the manufacturing processes and transport, which are most important. The subjective life of the mind and of the spirit are dependent on the bodies and the cultural capital of the people involved. However, they exist at the same time as the activities, relationships, and means, and in dialectical relationship to them.

"The contradiction of modern Capitalism is that the free market relies on coercion for its mode of action"
The social system, for example, "the State," then becomes a machine with input mechanisms, processes of transformation, and output flows.
