Very interesting compilation of research findings on female family business succession (follow link in article below), among others:   ➡ Firms still have a blind spot in preferring men over women in succession decisions. When both sons and daughters were possible successors, they chose sons 81.2% of the time. ➡ Interestingly, in unplanned successions due to death or illness, more females took over their firms because the predecessor’s preferences didn’t factor into the decision as heavily.   ➡ Female family successors have a higher level of CEO-related human capital, as measured by leadership and industry experience, business education, age and the use of a business plan during succession. ➡ Why women CEOs offer Family Businesses an entrepreneurial advantage #succession #nextgen #femaleleadership #familybusiness

When I first gave this interview, I was just starting my garden leave with my previous employer, and taking the bold step to start something on my own for the time being and see where it takes me in my career journey. People have asked me, especially during the earlier parts of my career why I chose to join and leave certain companies, when "I had it so good". Back then, it was somewhere in between trying to find true purpose and meaning in my career and to continue to tackle new challenges while still learning new knowledge and skills. I can only say that I wouldn't have learnt and experienced so much growth if I didn't consciously make these choices, as unconventional or uncomfortable as they might be. As I left the corporate world, I didn't want to just rest on my laurels and start applying for multitude of different jobs. I wanted to take a step back to re-evaluate my passion points, purpose and goals. Part of the outcome from the evaluation that started since a year ago, was that I ultimately like to solve business problems with transformative marketing and business-as-usual is my least favourite word in the dictionary. That was what motivated me to say yes when friends and acquaintances approached me for marketing help with their own ventures or their companies' challenges. Ultimately, purpose and passion goes hand in hand for me, regardless of which entity I am tagged to, regardless of whether it is Mad About Marketing Consulting, like-minded partners that want to work with me to help their clients or even the next like-minded visionary business leader who wants me to join his/her company. For this mindset, I am thankful to my family, especially my late father who was himself an entrepreneur of a dying trade building custom designed furniture from scratch. I am also thankful to all the great business and marketing leaders, and colleagues I have had the honour to work with throughout the course of my career, to enable my journey and success. What a blessing last night turned out to be! 💃🏾💃🏾. The feedback has been phenomenal ❤️💕🥰🙏🏾. I am grateful to Low Entropy Foundation, Vanessa Wideski and Ness Gale, for the invitation to deliver the keynote speech. I debated how vulnerable I wanted to be, how much of my story to share but then I remembered that, a speech without authentic stories is just words on paper. I am glad I laid it all bare, shared my journey and some of the strategies that have helped me. ✅ Drawing strength from our roots, acknowledging humble beginnings but not letting it hold back our future ✅ Preparing for the future we want - seeking knowledge, expertise and qualifications along the way ✅ Being resilient - not allowing the ‘low’ times to keep us down ✅ Surrounding ourselves with good people - mentors, sounding boards, community ✅ Praying for ‘Grace and Favour’ - seeking spirituality and the acknowledgment of a higher power Our panel conversation with our fabulous moderator Zahra Alani was deeply insightful and I learned so much from Sandra Song, Ph.D. Mary Ellen Schaafsma and Alyssa Barry. Sincere thanks to our indigenous leaders who attended, blessed us and shared with us 🙏🏾. From them, we now know we are ‘Femtors’. My cup was filled, by just being in a room full of women, who are walking similar journies and striving for the same outcomes: 💡Customized support for women (we are talking equity, not equality 📢 ), 💡Gender advantaged policies on childcare, parent care, business financing, pay equity, executive and board representation. 💡More guidance, education and empowerment for women on finances, financial literacy, business sustainability etc Studies do indicate that empowerment of women will advance global GDP by at least 20% (World Bank).
