As we welcome the #NewYear, let's commit to minimizing interruptions for women. We can achieve this by voicing our support with phrases like, “I want to hear the rest of [Name’s] perspective” or “That’s a valuable point raised by [Name]. Let’s take a moment to explore it further before proceeding.” If you’re facilitating a meeting, help reduce disruptions by adhering to an agenda and encouraging structured participation. You could say, “Let’s take turns and gather everyone’s insights.” Additionally, consider inviting specific women in the discussion to share their thoughts.

2023 was a year of incredible transformation at Women Creating Change (WCC). We launched an ambitious plan to empower 100,000 women to lead and raise their civic voices over the next decade, and solidified our key policy pillars to ensure that more women can become civically engaged on issues that matter to them — in order to make a difference in their communities. Read all about it in our 2023 Annual Report: Forward Together. https://lnkd.in/ejJTYxM2

It really upsets me that I've often had to look up "how to respond to being constantly interrupted" throughout my career. The solutions I've often found are things I can do, but I'd much prefer if the interrupters learned how to share space. I continue to try to work on not interrupting people while they are speaking or correcting myself if I have. I remember reading this and it helped me gain a bit of perspective to take things less personally: "According to world-renowned gender communication expert Deborah Tannen, men speak to determine and achieve power and status. Women talk to determine and achieve connection." There are some great insights in the article linked below on how to hold space: "Men, think twice before you interrupt. Are you interrupting to become the speaker and gain power? How will you look to everyone else in the room? Are you interrupting to get clarity? If so, make sure you ask a clear question and allow the speaker to regain the floor. Are you interrupting because you think you will forget what you want to say? Jot key words on your notepad for use later, instead of interrupting." https://lnkd.in/g8BGjnJ3
