Orkney is continuing to develop as an energy exporter. It started with oil, almost fifty years ago, then came wind and more recently tide, and work has expanded into hydrogen and battery storage and a search for alternative power sources for ships and planes. What may come next? Neil Kermode of EMEC and Gareth Davies of Aquatera give a perspective from the heart of ongoing developments. https://lnkd.in/ePSnGizE

Big changes are on the horizon for Blackpool, with the exciting proposal of a solar farm at Blackpool Airport Ltd. ✈ This project could be a gamechanger for both the airport and the wider town, setting a great example of how sustainable energy solutions can benefit the environment and local communities alike. By generating its own renewable energy, the airport would significantly reduce its carbon footprint while lowering energy costs - making operations more efficient and eco-friendly. Not only is this a step forward for environmental sustainability, but it also aligns with broader goals of making Blackpool a greener and more attractive place for both residents and visitors 🌱 The impact doesn’t stop there. This move towards renewable energy could help attract more environmentally conscious businesses and further investment into the town, opening up new opportunities for growth and development. Plus, initiatives like these help build a cleaner, greener future for everyone in the community. Stay tuned as Blackpool continues to take important strides in sustainability - this is just the beginning of what’s possible with renewable energy at the heart of local development. Happy Wildlife Day! 🌍❤️ Today we celebrate the incredible beauty of our planet’s wildlife and how it can co-exist with renewable energy. We took a tour with @nccleantech while at @nabcep to learn about the benefits and implementation of Solar Grazing. A concept that uses sheep to graze a solar farm instead of lawnmowers. This cuts out the carbon footprint of gas powered landscaping while providing local feed for sheep farms, a win win if you ask us. Always inspired to learn new ways to enhance energy efficiency. Together, we can utilize a more intentional symbiosis between wildlife and energy generation for future generations! #WildlifeConservationDay

🌊 Turning Ambition into Action for Nature-Friendly Offshore Wind 🌊 I recently had the pleasure of attending the 'Strong Winds, Thriving Seas' conference hosted by the Renewables Grid Initiative and WindEurope, working collaboratively through OCEaN – Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature. The event was filled with inspiring discussions and insightful pitches that emphasized the importance of prioritizing biodiversity within offshore wind projects. Key themes included the need for robust maritime spatial planning and better use of ecological and social non-price criteria in offshore wind auctions. The panel moderators did a fantastic job navigating complex conversations, focusing on actionable solutions for deploying offshore wind and grids on time while minimizing impacts on nature, restoring biodiversity, and involving coastal communities. It’s an encouraging step toward a nature-positive future for offshore wind and marine biodiversity. Another highlight was reconnecting with innovators like ECOncrete, ECOCEAN, Reefy, and established suppliers like Fugro, as well as engaging in great discussions with the #IUCN #GINGR initiative team. It’s always exciting to see familiar faces and learn about ongoing research projects and initiatives, as well as the fast evolving industry of nature inclusive design and approaches for long-term monitoring. As a member of OCEaN, SSE Renewables looks forward to supporting these initiatives further and collaborating on future efforts to achieve a truly nature-and-people positive energy transition in Europe. I missed the cocktail hour to make it home just in time for Halloween trick-or-treating, and I apologize for not getting to connect with everyone. Please know that our kids embraced the festivities with crazy costumes and some well-rehearsed jokes to earn their treats. 🎃👻 #OffshoreWind #Renewables #NaturePositive #EnergyAndNature #HalloweenMemories #WorkingMom #WorkLifeBalance
