📣 We are very happy to announce the publication of 'Hardware for Educating Quantum Engineers', a white paper written by Eindhoven University of Technology and Aquark Technologies, resulting from our first call for proposals. Both the Netherlands and the United Kingdom have designated #quantumtechnology as a priority technology that will revolutionise many aspects of life and bring benefits to the economy and society of both countries. 👩🎓 Achieving these benefits will require significant resources in terms of time, materials, financing and in particular talent. However, quantum equipment required for educational purposes and (re-)training of engineers is often prohibitively expensive and requires a lot of finesse to use. To address this issue, new hardware needs to be developed with a primary focus on cost and ease of use. 🤝 In this white paper the authors argue that the development of inexpensive, robust hardware for educating quantum engineers represents a prime opportunity for UK/NL collaboration, utilising the strengths of both countries in the context of cold atom quantum technology. They make a set of recommendations that focus on enabling immediate and direct collaboration between the UK and NL, in line with the MOU that was signed last year, with outcomes that will benefit both economies, delivery of their quantum strategies and technology development. The Netherlands Innovation Network UK would like to thank Alexander Jantzen and Gijs Hijmans for this relevant and timely paper and look forward to fostering further collaboration between the Netherlands and the UK, starting with our programme around the UK National Quantum Technologies Showcase this week! The quantum internet would be a lot easier to build if we could use existing telecommunications technologies and infrastructure. Over the past few years, researchers have discovered defects in silicon that could be used to send and store quantum information over widely-used telecommunications wavelengths. Could these defects in silicon be the best choice among all the promising candidates to host qubits for quantum communications? Prof. Evelyn Hu, Ph.D. candidate Aaron Day, and a team of researchers developed a platform to probe, interact with and control these potentially powerful quantum systems. The device uses a simple electric diode to manipulate qubits inside a commercial silicon wafer. Using this device, the researchers were able to explore how the defect responds to changes in the electric field and tune its wavelength within the telecommunications band, which is important for quantum networking when disparate quantum systems need to be aligned. Telecommunications advancement into 6G to 10G era may push technology into science fiction era sooner than many may think possible. These scientists made the new era of low energy ultrafast secure communications possible with their innovative devising. Optical switches, the devices responsible for sending information via telephone signals, rely on light as a transmission medium and on electricity as a processing tool, requiring an extra set of energy to interpret the data. A new alternative engineered by Zhou uses only light to power a full transmission, which could improve speed and energy efficiency for telecommunications and computation platforms. A new alternative engineered by Zhou uses only light to power a full transmission, which could improve speed and energy efficiency for telecommunications and computation platforms. “Achieving strong non-linearity was unexpected, which opened a new direction that we were not previously exploring: quantum communications. They have used the QPress which is an automated tool for synthesizing quantum materials with layers as thin as a single atom. Zhou’s research team aims to increase energy efficiency down to the smallest amount of electromagnetic energy, a main challenge in enabling the so-called quantum communications, which offer a promising alternative for data security. Quantum communications offer a promising alternative as they encode the information using light, which cannot be intercepted without altering its quantum state. Zhou’s method to improve materials' nonlinearity is a step closer to enabling those technologies. #telecommunications #6G #aiml #datasecurity #quantumnet

🗞 Electronic News! 🗞 Researchers in the UK are making significant strides in developing a new generation of optical fibres tailored specifically for the quantum Internet. Unlike traditional optical fibres, the team at the University of Bath has engineered speciality fibres with a micro-structured core featuring a complex pattern of air pockets running along the entire length. These unique fibres have the capability to support quantum entanglement of photons, enabling quantum key distribution and facilitating data transfers within the quantum Internet. Dr. Kristina Rusimova from the Department of Physics at Bath highlighted the limitations of conventional optical fibres in accommodating the operational wavelengths required for light-based quantum technologies. She emphasized the need for fibres that can align with the characteristics of single-photon sources, qubits, and active optical components essential for quantum applications. #electricalengineering #electronics #embedded #embeddedsystems #electrical #computerchips Follow us on LinkedIn to get daily news: HardwareBee - Electronic News and Vendor Directory
