💥 Breaking Barriers in AI: Empowering Women in Tech 💅 According to Interface, women comprise only 22% of AI talent globally, with an even smaller percentage—less than 14%—holding senior executive roles in the field. At Neural Lab, we are committed to rewriting this narrative and driving change! We’re proud to have incredible young female talents on our team, like Sophie, our Data Analyst Intern. At Neural Lab, we don’t just foster technical growth like coding skills—we empower the next generation to become industry experts and inspiring leaders. Together, we’re building a more diverse and inclusive future for AI. 🚀 #WomenInTech #AILeadership #EmpoweringTalent #DiversityInAI

Summer 2022, before I started studying #technologypolicy, I read a book called "Technically wrong" by Sara Wachter-Boettcher that talked about sexist apps and #biases in #technology and #algorithms. While my econometrics brain doesn't make me the biggest fan of calling algorithms "biased" unless they actually are, I am a fan of addressing biases in society that feed into the data based on which those algorithms get trained. So the book sparked my interest a lot! ➡ Fast forward, 2 years later <insert meme> 🌟 Yesterday evening, as a part of the #WomenInTechWeek events, I had the pleasure of attending a workshop focused on the advancements in GenAI and its impact on identity and fiction-making. This event brought together individuals to explore the potential of AI in creating virtual characters and narratives, while also addressing the challenges of representation. 💻 The workshop featured insightful discussions led by experts in the field, including Dr. Caitlin Bentley, who introduced the representation of women in GenAI, and Dr. Imke van Heerden, PhD and Dr. Maira Klyshbekova, who showcased cutting-edge projects at RAi UK. We engaged in hands-on activities, creating our own AI portraits and sharing our experiences, fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge-sharing and empowerment. 🌐 Responsible AI is crucial in ensuring that technology serves all communities inclusively and equitably. In AI development we should account for societal biases that often marginalize underrepresented groups. This approach not only enhances the quality of AI-generated content but also empowers individuals to reclaim their narratives and identities, fostering a more diverse and representative digital landscape that in return contributes to better tech development. 💡 The issue with biases and underrepresentation in AI is not just in development of AI, but it's in the fact that outputs of GenAI will soon make up a majority of the "input" we consume or use in our work and research, and if those outputs are biased and not representative, they will reinforce those biases and exclusion in society at a higher rate. Think of this reinforcement as a compound interest or an exponential function :) 🙏 A heartfelt thank you to the organisers, WeAreTechWomen, Dr Vanessa Vallely OBE, Dr. Coral Manton, Åste Amundsen, for their dedication to this important initiative, and to all the speakers for their invaluable insights. Together, we are paving the way for more inclusive and equitable representations in technology. #GenerativeAI #WomenInTech #AIArt #Inclusion #Empowerment #GenAI

I've just had the opportunity to attend the Perspektywy Women in Tech Summit, a gathering I thought would centre strictly on #STEM, but, to my delight, several sessions I joined did tackle the areas I'm personally interested in such as #linguistics, as well as LLMs, applications of AI and the role of women in start-ups. I did not spot much about language-related education, though, so there's still some room for improvement. 😏 Fun fact number one (and I'm quite startled I'm writing that). I enjoyed listening to talks about #quantum technologies (I thought qubits were really not my thing!). As unbelievably difficult as it sounds, this topic has definitely caught my attention! Will #pronunciationtraining ever profit from that? Imagine employing quantum algorithms to provide: assistance to teachers, decent feedback to learners, and finally dealing with the SO WHAT of pronunciation assessment! Yowza! Fun fact number two. I heard #accent discrimination & lack of accent diversity mentioned a few times in the talks discussing AI bias. Glad to know this is recognised and that the publication I'm working on will be relevant. As I reflect on the #WomenInTech Summit experience, I'm thinking, perhaps in a year or two, I could climb on one of the stages there and share some insights from our work at Linguistic Computing Systems (LingCosms) with Jim Talley. ✨#dreambig ✨

🌟 Project Update! 🌟 I’m thrilled to announce that I recently developed a project for "Google's Women Techmakers Presents: She Builds AI" that detects gender bias language in job descriptions using **AI** and **ML**, a project that aligns with **UN Sustainable Development Goal 5** on gender equity. Through **sentiment analysis** and **bias scoring**, this tool offers deeper insights into how language in job listings might unintentionally favor or discourage different genders. Using models from **Hugging Face’s Transformers library**, like **BERT** and **Zero-Shot Classification**, I analyzed bias without extensive labeled data, making it easier to scale. Excited to continue working toward more inclusive job opportunities! 🌍💪 I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Sir Zafar Shahid, PhD who provided us with iCodeGuru, an outstanding learning plateform. Also, special thanks to Sir Muhammad Shahid whose expertise in AI and insights helped a lot. I just found out that aspirational data training AI is challenged by bias. Um….yeah…..duh?🙃 (Ok to still use duh?) AI is literally changing every form of our research and communication (and more)…so why not fix aspirational data to KNOW our aspirations?🧠 Start by figuring out your own aspirations. No one else knows them….especially AI. Yesterday I spoke with two women who gave me beautiful visions of their goals. “In three years I want to move to Europe and travel to a different city each 3 months. I’ll generate income through fractional work and plan to grow old as an explorer.” “I want to send my future grandkids to a special summer camp that meant the world to me and my kids.” Beautiful. Personal. Aspirations. What are yours?
