Law firm owners, growing a law firm is not easy. Here are few things to keep in mind: ▪️ You'll have to first grow yourself → your skills, your mindset, your vision ▪️ You'll have to take action → you can't sit back and expect things to just happen ▪️ You'll have to take risk → you can't play it safe (but don't be stupid) ▪️ You'll go farther and faster with mentors → you should seek help and guidance I've been interviewing incredible law firm founders all along the law firm growth cycle... from those a few months in to those who have sold and exited altogether. They have a lot of wisdom to share. I've learned so much. Go check out Founding Partner Podcast to listen to their journeys. Audio version wherever you listen to pods and video version on my firm's YouTube channel. Please let me know what you think and share with others who may find value.

The "Business of Law" episode of #BehindTheLines #TheHoustonLawyerPodcast is now available to download! The episode starts out with "'We've Only Just Begun': The New Texas Business Court" featuring Natasha Breaux of Haynes Boone. Natasha really breaks down what Texas lawyers need to know about these new courts (the 15th COA and the divisions of the Business Court). Next, we really delve into the #BusinessOfLaw. Michael Cancienne of Jordan, Lynch & Cancienne is up front about what it's like to move from a partner position at a large international law firm to owning your own firm in "'You Can Go Your Own Way': Transitioning from Big Law to Owning Your Own Practice." This segment has a lot food for thought for lawyers who are considering leaving a firm to hang their own shingle. Jonathan Jackson, also known as the "Sneaker Lawyer," discusses how he became the Sneaker Lawyer and provides some pointers for lawyers who are wanting to create their own brand should consider in "'Pumped Up Kicks': The Sneaker Lawyer's On-Point Branding." This is a really fun interview. And, finally, we all know sometimes partnerships don't work out. Pete Patterson of Patterson, PC has experience working with law partnerships that are breaking up and provides great advice in "'Breaking Up Is Hard to Do': But These Tips Will Help." Everyone who is thinking about starting a firm with a partner, is working with partners now, or may leave a partnership should listen to this segment. Breaking up is hard, but if you take Pete's advice, maybe it will be a little less painful for you and your clients. HBA members who listen to the entire episode may receive one hour of CLE credit. In today’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, I chat with Gordana Mikalicki a/ka/a @lawyergordi, about how she’s working to transform the personal injury marketing in Phoenix, AZ, with her unique branding and service model. Gordana founded Elmm Law Group because she found the Arizona personal injury legal market to be stale and saturated with predominately male-run firms more concerned about their bottom lines than client injuries. The Elmm Law Group prides itself on providing clients with a non-traditional law firm experience focusing on direct attorney-client contact (she gives clients her private cell phone number), diligence, & straightforwardness. It uses modern technology to elevate efficiency and build client case values. Listen in as Gordi and I discuss: ✅ What influenced her to want to be a lawyer even at an early age ✅ Her journey from serving as an Assistant Attorney General and public service work to personal injury lawyer (and the mindset shift that helped her make the transition) ✅ What turns her off about most personal injury marketing, why she thinks it hurts the profession, and what she’s doing differently ✅ What she did as a new law firm owner to keep her business growing during the COVID pandemic ✅ How she overcame her fear of being in videos on social media and created a successful brand ✅ What she looks for in hiring her staff and why she’s found it to be more important than a particular skillset. ✅ Her number one piece of advice to women lawyers who want to start and scale a law firm business (Hint: Don’t expect her to sugarcoat it.) ✅ And much more! Back in the day, breaking into the plaintiff's side of law was a real challenge. While studying law, the opportunity to intern at a standout plaintiff's firm in Macon was a game-changer. Post-law school, the ambition was to continue on the plaintiff's path. However, the landscape back then was tough; plaintiff's firms weren't as plentiful as they are today. The norm was to secure a position early, and more often than not, that meant starting on the defense side. That's what happened—six months on the defense, before finally making the transition to a plaintiff's firm. It's fascinating how the legal industry has evolved, making it somewhat easier for new lawyers to find their footing on the plaintiff's side. For a deep dive into this journey and the shifts in the legal job market, check out the latest episode of The Renegade Lawyers Podcast.
