What's a good school, in your opinion? Here's our take. A place where learning closely meets individual values; A warm community where we forgive and repair relationships if broken; A place where any mistake is just a new lesson added to a long string of experiences; A place where only time travel is impossible - at least until we find out it isn't; A place where diversity doesn't divide us but unites us; A place where each of us can be unique, where we are all authentic in being different; A place where we learn not only formulas or facts but many interesting things about the world around us and how we can live a happy and fulfilling life. In the following days, we will take you on a virtual journey and show you what a day in the life of a student at Transylvania College looks like. Until then, what makes a good school for your children? 😊

This week saw the sixth full week of my primary initial teacher training; the third week of being in placement school A full time. As part of my continued professional development and reflective practice, each week, I will be recalling one thing that stood out to me from educational practice or research and the importance of it, and assess how I might or suggest others could apply it in a classroom/school/educational setting. This week, I have enjoyed developing my subject knowledge across different curriculum subjects, particularly Science & Geography. It has been interesting to see the pedagogy applied towards the teaching of different subjects, but a student-centred approach is always at the heart. Integrative, reflective and enquiry-based learning allows for extra learning to happen always; a desire to grow & develop beyond the lesson, and understand theory and concept on a deeper level. It allows for easier scaffolding of understanding and challenges creative thinking to real-life applications. Such as, forces in Science, we did an experiment on testing which material made the best parachute, thanks to air resistance. Enquiry and investigation was followed by a real-life application to what materials would be best for a spacecraft to Mars… drawing in other elements of Science and applying the use of materials with a greater surface area to real life. Building upon learning, through questioning & creative use of pedagogy across the curriculum is key. Here goes week seven!

Imagine the end of the school year - a time of celebration, of moving up a grade and excitement about summer plans. From reading, to swimming, to spending time with friends, kids need resources to keep learning and playing when school school is out. For many, the end of the school year means the end of access to books. Without the school library, or access to books at home, young readers can't read. Support Books Are Wings programs, combat the “Summer Slide” and help make reading a key part of every child's summer experience! https://bit.ly/3XfopGi
