The South Western Kentucky region enjoyed another stellar year for tourism and visitor spending with Christian County leading the way as the state's #9 most visited county based on tourism receipts. With nearly $240M in tourism spending, Christian County's tourism economy helped fuel record receipts for hotels, restaurants, and small businesses that serve visitors and tourists. "We applaud the Cadiz-Trigg County Tourism Commission, Hopkinsville-Christian County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Oak Grove Tourism Commission, as well as our regional partners, for their hard work establishing the entire SWK region as a great place to visit, recreate, and relax. This most recent data continues a trend of positive news for South Western Kentucky with recent positive economic indicators including: 1. Christian County ranked among state leaders for new business permits (2023). 2. Hopkinsville surpassed $1B in equivalent payroll (2023). 3. Elkton ranked as Kentucky's 3rd fastest growing city (2020-2023). 4. Cadiz ranked as Kentucky's 6th fastest growing city (2020-2023). 5. Land Between the Lakes/Lake Barkley remain one of the state's top tourism attractions with over 2 million annual visitors. England’s Historic Cities is a consortium of 13 Historic Cities in England, including Bath, Cambridge, Canterbury, Carlisle, Chester, Durham, Greenwich, Lancaster, Lincoln, Oxford, Salisbury, Stratford-upon-Avon and York. The Irish coastline doesn't stop being wild at Derry and Antrim so a proposal to extend the Wild Atlantic Way to the Causeway Coast does make economic sense. Incorporating a globally recognised brand with Northern Ireland's premier coastal trail can only be a good thing. The majority of visitors to the North come via the Republic. This is testament to the scale of Dublin Airport's passenger numbers and the connectivity from the ports of Dublin, Rosslare and Cork. From an industry point of view it allows the Wild Atlantic Way to offer more, enhancing the brand's range of attractions as well as lifting the Glens of Antrim and Causeway Coast to a global destination status. Indeed there is a danger that with the structure of Irish tourism promotion many budgets are competing against each other and real synergies as well as money can be lost because of a lack of cooperation. Cross border cooperation has brought dividends and opportunities for over 2 decades now as can be seen by the transformation of the tourist industry in Northern Ireland. Belfast's self confidence is a testament to that with its vibrant nightlife and world quality attraction in the Titanic Museum. We hope this can continue by extending the Wild Atlantic Way beyond Donegal. When you go to the Gold Coast for a holiday, you don’t care that two of the main theme parks are 47km from the airport or which council areas they’re in, do you? You probably don’t even think about it. The Blue Mountains and Western Sydney has traditionally been a day trip destination from the current CBD and Kingsford Smith Airport or a weekend getaway for Sydneysiders. But come 2026, the new Western Sydney International Airport will bring us a new type of visitor, one that we still need to get our head around. Judging by the Gold Coast example, passengers from around the world will filter far and wide throughout our region without questioning. They will stay and play, eat and play, see and play, do business and play, visit friends and family and play wherever they can get to quickly and easily. We need to work together as an industry to erase those traditional council boundaries from our guest experience as soon as they alight the plane. Our guests should be encouraged to crisscross between Blue Mountains, Penrith and Hawkesbury and guided through their visit no matter what they want to do and where. We also need to stop worrying about where they will stay as long as they book a bed in Penrith, the Hawkesbury or Blue Mountains. How long they stay will depend on how ready we are and how many accessible attractions we have. The first passenger planes touch down in 2 years time. Is Western Sydney ready for this new visitor? Not yet. We need more things for more people to do more often before then. So big thinkers, what are you waiting for? Get those big projects out of your heads and into reality. And if you’re an existing attraction that currently does not service the inbound market, get export ready and join forces with the rest of the industry to maximise this global opportunity.
