Exciting news in Houston! FTA has awarded the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County $1.2 million to plan for transit-oriented development along its proposed Gulfton Corridor bus rapid transit line. The federal funding will help METRO identify locations for future mixed-use development, devise strategies to enhance transit access in underserved communities, and assess community infrastructure needs, such as repairs to sidewalks, crosswalks and traffic signals. bit.ly/FY24TOD

Last week, John D. Plante, Anthony W. Ravosa, Jr., and I paid a visit to Secretary of Housing & Livable Communities, Ed Augustus, and his Senior Advisor, Gina McLaughlin - our fellow building mates at 100C. We shared experiences and ideas on how Commonwealth agencies can do their part to accelerate the housing production policy goals of the Healey-Driscoll Administration and streamline permitting on their own accord - an overlooked role in the process amid all the attention being paid to MBTA Communities zoning reform at the local level. We also discussed creative ways to leverage the development of housing on state-owned properties through low-interest federal financing for transit-oriented development. As many of you know, I'll be happy to talk your ears off - any time, anywhere - about the tremendous TOD opportunities being unlocked by the U.S. Department of Transportation's TIFIA and RRIF programs. The housing crisis is having its moment. Let's not let it go to waste. #langan #livablecommunities #housingcrisis #usdot #tifia #rrif

It’s been six months since ex-TC Jasper crossed Far North Queensland and five months since ex-TC Kirrily crossed North Queensland, both causing widespread destruction to residential communities, infrastructure, and tourism. Today, we look to #prevention, #preparedness and #recovery needs of the regional communities affected. Suncorp Group and FRRR (Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal) are inviting not-for-profit organisations in impacted areas to apply for a share in $300,000 to support ongoing resilience and recovery efforts. “I want to encourage local organisations who may have been impacted by cyclones Jasper and Kirrily to apply for funding for projects that will make their communities more resilient for the future,” said Suncorp Group CEO Steve Johnston. Grant applications are now open through the Rebuilding Futures Program, and close 11 July. More information: https://lnkd.in/g5-sB-iV #resilience #rebuildingfutures

Valley Transportation Authority Policy Advisory Committee. The Santa Clara County Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has released the Transit-Oriented Communities Grant to seek proposals from Santa Clara municipalities, jurisdictions, arts, cultural, education, nonprofit and other community organizations to support VTA’s vision of equitable Transit-Oriented Communities. #HiltonForCouncil #Gilroy #HiltonForGilroy #DowntownGilroy #GilroyBPAC #GilMtg https://lnkd.in/gv2676MJ The goal is to grow innovative and robust partnerships between VTA and local public agencies, nonprofit, community organizations, and other diverse stakeholders to strengthen communities, increase transit ridership, reduce the need for car trips, and support intensive mixed-use, mixed-income development around light rail stations and transit hubs. Selected projects will be collaborative across community and/or local government partners and remove barriers to creating safe, walkable, healthy, resilient, and thriving neighborhoods next to transit. VTA will fund $750,000 in total to eligible applicants. Selected projects are planned to commence between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025. There’s a Pre-Application Workshop on April 30th 1:30-2:30pm at the Gilroy Library I want to provide some stats for the VTA bus routes in Gilroy. These daily boarding increases are from January 2024, all have seen an increase in ridership year-over-year, and to these riders I say thank you for riding public transit. We're very glad that this got unanimous support at Niagara Region Council. Thanks to Councillor Diana Huson, MBA, MA for bringing it forward. Infrastructure is a major concern for businesses - when infrastructure decays, we can't do business anymore. We depend on those municipal roads, water, wastewater, and everything else that municipal government provides, and yet the ability of municipal government to provide it is increasingly lacking. There were major tax increases across Niagara in the last two budgets, repeated all across the country, and those were just to maintain existing levels. There's no possibility to shrink the backlog of infrastructure in a poor state of repair, and few reserves to deal with emergencies and climate damage. We need a fundamental rethink of how municipal government is funded.
Thrilled to receive unanimous Niagara Region Council support for my motion backing Federation of Canadian Municipalities advocacy and an urgent call for continued funding for the Canada Community Building Fund (CCBF) in the upcoming federal budget. The CCBF is the most reliable funding tool for municipalities in renewing and replacing vital infrastructure that our citizens rely on—including roads, water infrastructure, public transit and so much more. Renewal of this program is essential for our growth! The next generation of infrastructure programs must address an important gap ~ water and wastewater infrastructure funding and also an increase to the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund. Thanks also to my colleague Mayor Mat Siscoe for seconding and supporting the debate with context from Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative , Ontario's Big City Mayors (OBCM) and Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Canadian municipalities need to voice their support for his critical municipal funding tool! #cdnpoli #cdnmuni You can view our meeting online at https://lnkd.in/g7iiri49

25% of the proceeds collected within participating region is split up and sent to the counties and municipalities.
