We’re committed to supporting the Alliance for Local and Regional Production, Innovation and Access to accelerate increased access to affordable and high-quality tests. 🤝 Our Chief Technology Officer, Marta Fernández Suárez, gave a statement at the plenary session on the Alliance during the 3rd #G20 health working group meeting in Salvador. In her statement, she recommended key elements to ensure success of projects under the Alliance, including: ✅ Provision of end-to-end technical assistance that complements financial support. ✅ Equitable and mutually agreed terms for the cooperation, including licensing and benefits sharing terms and clear roles and responsibilities for all stakeholders. ✅ A business plan that includes an appropriate, clinical, regulatory and commercial strategy as well as a balanced portfolio of products that address local needs while ensuring financial sustainability. ✅ A phased, well-planned implementation approach to technology transfer or co-development and to capacity building. Digital health in Africa has the potential to improve access to care, especially in remote areas, and to enhance disease management. The right innovations can address the continent's healthcare challenges. We need to stop viewing the advancement of technology as a threat and instead see it as an opportunity to improve the African healthcare sector. Our Country Lead, Moh’ M. Alhaji, PhD, will join colleagues at the Africa Digital Health Summit in Lagos this Thursday and Friday (June 27-28). They will discuss findings from our exploratory study on optimizing the hybrid e-pharmacy platform for family planning in Lagos. A snippet from our survey revealed that while awareness of family planning among the underserved population was high (87%), awareness of accessibility via digital health platforms is low (16%). Barriers include lack of awareness, trust issues, privacy concerns, and cost perceptions. Our ongoing lab-in-the-field study aims to address these barriers and improve access for underserved populations through low-tech equity model prototypes.
