A perfect lesson in "skating where the puck is going to be" I learned as young VC from Olaf Jacobi who was the responsible partner for Dedrone. Back in 2015 Defense Tech wasn't a thing and in fact raised more eyebrows than anything else. Co-founder Jörg Lamprecht and team had a very compelling vision how drones will be ubiquitous, that there will not only be well-intentioned use cases and that in turn will create a huge market for drone security. Back then this was the most far out vision I had ever done a due diligence on. That means: no market, no competition, no impressive exits. But on the other hand: a very compelling story and an excellent founding team. Did this bother me? First: yes (I am a data nerd). But then: no. Long term VC and value creation is ultimately about investing in stuff that matters. This matters. 🥳🍾👏👏👏👏

But actually, if you think about it carefully, This is naturally the best way to operate, just like the innovation of computers from code interface to graphical interface, just like the change of cars from manual transmission to automatic transmission. No matter how much you emphasize that automatic transmission is less fun to drive than manual transmission, this is still an irreversible trend.
