At one point in time in the 1980s and mid 1990s, Kuwait was the fourth biggest GCC market segment behind Dubai, Jeddah and Riyadh. Now Abu Dhabi and Doha have surpassed it by a long margin largely due to Kuwait being the only GCC country to have more restrictive tourist and work visa policy versus their Gulf counterparts. However despite its short comings, in the post covid era demand to/from Kuwait has risen quite remarkably fueled by Kuwaiti residents wanting to visit newer cities. The region which has seen the biggest boom in travel demand from KWI is Central Asia. One just has to look at the numbers comparing 2019 versus 2023 for cities such as Tashkent, Almaty along with Baku and Tbilisi to realize how significant it is. *Round trip pax numbers below 2019 vs 2023 Almaty – 1,209 vs 59,270 Tashkent – 3,280 vs 67,975 Baku – 74,199 vs 98.426 Tbilisi – 64,302 vs 96,526 To be fair, credit must be given to the old Wataniya Airways management team who initiated flights to the CIS region from KWI in 2016-17 which sparked this demand boom. After they departed, Jazeera Airways has successfully and aggressively pursued opportunities in the CIS region whilst Kuwait Airways stays relevant only in Baku and Tbilisi. What Jazeera can claim full credit for is the boom of demand being witnessed on the Kuwait-Moscow sector which in 2023 saw 77,800 pax fly p2p versus 5,696 in 2019. J9 currently operates multiple times per week nonstop Kuwait-Moscow-Kuwait using an A320. In terms of other new cities getting new nonstop or increased frequencies from KWI in the post covid-era, these include Manchester, Madrid, Larnaca, Male and Salalah of which some have been opened by KU and some by J9. On the intercontinental front, its good to see demand for GVA, MXP and BCN being increased with perhaps the biggest surprise being HKT-Phuket. It is also noteworthy to mention that despite nonstop KWI-BCN flights being launched in Q4-2023 only, BCN-KWI-BCN p2p demand overall was still +10% more than MAD! Overall, its good to see the home market demand growing steadily as it is very high yielding and has a size able premium base. KU in particular needs to get more aggressive and focus on niche sectors especially those where it could + currently have a monopoly. The biggest selling point for KU is its free 2 piece baggage allowance valid for all routes! #kuwait #kuwaitairways #jazeera #jazeeraairways #ku #j9 #a320 #b777 #a350 #a320neo
