SRG’s fall 2024 ‘Recruiting Engagement: Expectations and Experiences’ research asked students to speak out on career fairs, events, representatives, communications – and the IMPACT of 15 statements specific to their continued interest in employers as the semester unfolded. Here are a few key observations about the top-rated IMPACT differentiators: ☑ Mass communications channels, such as templated email campaigns, are not only obvious to most students, but, by a number of survey metrics, continue to frustrate candidates with significant job interest mismatches and "feeling spammy"; ☑ Lack of authenticity is apparent not only in students’ interaction with some employers’ representatives [“they didn’t seem to want to be here...”] but in receiving “personalized” emails and texts about jobs that “everyone else got”; ☑ There’s an opportunity cost to consider for those employers scaling back in-person recruiting efforts to conserve budget: students value those that “invest” [their term of choice] in coming to campus and meeting with them face-to-face. University recruiting goes beyond the job posting and career fair. National Association of Colleges and Employers recently published an insightful report of "Faculty Attitudes and Behaviors: The Integration of Career Readiness Into the Curriculum" to explore relationship between faculty, career center and students in the aspect of career development. Some interesting insights from the report: + Faculty members are more comfortable advising students in their disciplinary area, but much less comfortable advising students outside of their disciplinary area. + Instead of prioritizing career services as primary resources to provide career development to students, faculty members tend to draw materials from their personal network. + Most faculty members, despite are lack of career development/counseling components in their formal training, rate themselves very high on knowledge of career pathways beyond academic environment. + Employability competencies are still not cascaded clearly from institutional level to ensure qualified career development integration into the curriculum For employers with priorities in university recruiting strategies, it is important to build strong network with not only just university career center but also working closely with targeted faculty departments to provide toolkits, development opportunities and industry advise to ensure career readiness into curriculum. Dynamite! A high school junior told me that while working at Target he went out of his way to learn other aspects of the job so he can help the team more. Holy smokes, this young man already has it figured out! He's made himself MORE valuable and that story will land with any job recruiter. Is your story being told how your ideal audience needs to experience it? I had the great pleasure of sharing storytelling strategies to these bright young men and women at Confluence Preparatory Academy. Mr. Noble's JAG class prepares juniors and seniors with life skills like interviewing for a job. As these students prepare resumes for a job fair, we talked about tailoring their story to employers. In our talk, we discussed the importance sharing stories that prove the things employers desire; dedication, hard work, reliability, etc. Each student was able to come up with authentic stories from team projects, high school sports, and past work that showcase the attributes companies want in employees. This concept is simple, but not easy. It also applies to the business leaders we work with. How confident are you that your ideal audiences are experiencing your story the way THEY NEED to experience it? That includes customers, team members, recruiting, channel partners.
