3/5 Agrivoltaic energy....What? Agrivoltaics is the practice of combining agriculture and solar energy production by installing solar panels on farmland, allowing both crops and energy to be produced simultaneously. In Ohio, agrivoltaic projects are being explored to enhance agricultural resilience and promote renewable energy. By positioning solar panels to allow for sufficient sunlight and airflow, farmers can maintain crop growth while benefiting from the additional income generated through solar energy. Importantly, under a virtual net metering model, farmers wouldn't necessarily bear the upfront costs of installation, as they could participate in shared energy networks that distribute financial benefits without direct ownership of the panels. This dual-use approach is gaining interest in Ohio as it offers a sustainable way to support the state's agricultural and clean energy goals. It doesn't have to be either/or. Did you know that agrivoltaic projects also comprise less than 10% of all large solar projects in the US? Some metrics estimate it at below 5% overall. You'll often hear pushback and criticisms that solar destroys valuable farmland...but rarely will you hear about the two being able to coexist. Here's the truth as Dale Arnold (Ohio Farm Bureau) and Tony Logan (Agrivoltaics) put it. Such projects help maintain soil moisture over the 25-30 year lifespan, provide shade for livestock, and create multi-generational wealth in a system where farms are often passed down through family members. Continuing to collect my own thoughts on this both on the critical and supportive side but from a first impression, this implementation sounds like something that should be enthusiastically explored.
