To realise fully the potential of Northern Ireland’s economy, we are urging the Northern Ireland Executive to develop and deliver a NI-specific logistics strategy. In our new report “Logistics: underpinning Northern Ireland’s economy”, we highlight the significance of the sector to the economy and identify five key areas where we believe the NI Executive must focus attention to drive sustainable growth: unlocking investment through public-private partnerships; innovative and integrated infrastructure; a fair transition to a green economy, addressing the skills challenge, and growing trade by building on easements under the Windsor Framework and maximising Northern Ireland’s unique selling point and market access to Great Britain and the EU. Surely getting rail freight with support from Iarnród Éireann Rail Freight is the easiest goal(although not being able to get a train from Lisburn to Belfast as a passenger is a joke until the autumn).

Very informative, and I'm glad to see some of the projects being given the green light to proceed, such as the flyovers on the A1. It is disappointing however, that £24 million has been spent on consultation for the York Street Interchange without so much as a peg being put in the ground. As DfI minister, John O'Dowd needs to get the legal issues around tendering sorted out before it costs the tax payers even more money. But once again, disappointingly but not surprising, this report from Logistics UK mentions very little or no support for HGV drivers.
