Last week, we were lucky enough to attend the The Architecture Symposium: Readymade, presented by @designspeaks_au and curated by Jennie Officer and Nigel Bertram. Readymade offered an approach to combating Victoria’s current housing shortage and affordability crisis, by shifting the focus away from redundancy and towards retention and renewal of existing building stock. One of the many highlights was Ingrid Bakker’s presentation of Hassell’s research ‘Radical Re-Use: From Office to Home’. Their research addresses the potential conversion of existing office buildings into residential complexes and proposes a paradigm shift in urban development that can be applied across cities around Australia and internationally. The research proffers that about 6.5% of Melbourne’s CBD office buildings are ‘ripe for radical re-use,’ with the potential to yield 10,000−12,000 new apartments and house up to 20,000 people. This approach would not only significantly add to Melbourne’s housing supply, but would uphold sustainability principles, including a reduction in upfront embodied carbon and the preservation of existing architectural assets. Hassell’s approach envisions a revitalised urban landscape that accommodates diverse lifestyles while also contributing to a regenerative future and breathing new life into our city. #housingaffordability #reuse #refurbish #rejuvenate #housing

Skyscrapers represent the pinnacle of modern construction and architectural design, rising up as symbols of innovation and progress. With cities becoming increasingly populated, the demand for space grows while available land remains constant. Skyscrapers address this challenge efficiently by extending the urban landscape vertically. Utilizing a relatively small footprint, these towering structures enable a larger number of people and businesses to occupy a single plot of land. As a result, they conserve valuable urban space and help reduce sprawl, leading to more sustainable city planning. Moreover, skyscrapers often incorporate the latest in green technology and design, setting new standards for energy-efficient and eco-friendly urban living.

Here's a throwback to our 2010 Woodlawn House project in Toronto, where we transformed the western half of a semi-detached building with sustainable features like reclaimed brick cladding and triple-glazed windows. Even back then sustainability was on our mind. Views from the top are the best! Back in 2010, green roofs were emerging as an innovative solution, but today, they are more common than ever. Even though it's a challenge to maintain in a colder climate, it's an aesthetic some may desire, and we are here for it. While green roofs help reduce the urban heat island effect and give back the green space, maybe even contribute to improving air quality. We've learned that a well-executed green roof requires careful planning, a team of green roof experts and architects working alongside building science professionals. For this project, we balanced aesthetics with functionality, carefully considering drainage, insulation, accessibility, and long-term maintenance, all while meeting budget expectations. The public realm refers to publicly accessible spaces that have the potential to facilitate interaction, movement, and activities within a community and city. City builders consider the public realm to be the space between buildings, including streets, sidewalks, parks, plazas, and other open spaces. City builders focus on creating and enhancing the public realm to ensure it is inclusive, accessible, and beneficial for all members of the community. This involves considering factors like design, infrastructure, landscaping, and maintenance to create functional and appealing public spaces. The public realm is a critical aspect of urban planning for several reasons, including promoting social interactions, creating inclusive and accessible spaces, supporting local businesses through increased foot traffic, promoting Eyes on the Street, and embracing natural environmental features. #yyc #yycliving #architecture #urbanplanning #planning #urbandesign #design
