Last year, I had the privilege of representing IntoWork Australia at the Paul Ramsay funded research into Reimaging the Employment Services System in Australia. The release of these reports is a worthwhile read for anyone involved in the "system" of employment services. As a veteran in the sector with exposure to employment, apprenticeship, training and disability services, engaging in this research has highlighted the need to consistently reflect on operating models and relationships, ensuring client-centred approach remains at the forefront. Pathways for individuals continue to diversify, with social enterprises driving forward innovation and options that will lead to meaningful success for those furthest from employment. These pathways needs to be increasingly considered within the approach to supporting individuals - as does the needs for greater exploration of Apprenticeship journeys. Great to see the new employment plans from Labour. 80% employment rate A new jobs & career service, joining up with work & health locally A Youth Guarantee for 18-21 year olds First one is ambitious but achievable if more people who are economically inactive and disabled are supported to work - many people want to work but don’t get the help they need. This would boost economic growth. The second is needed to deliver the first but it has to be locally delivered by partnership models in the context of local economies. Third one - about time!!! But it has to be real not a guarantee that has loads of caveats and small print. Key to this is significantly increasing apprenticeship opportunities for young people. Numerous discussions with Laura-Jane Rawlings MBE Fiona Aldridge on this one! MH&A

This article dives deep into the inspiring journeys of individuals who, despite facing redundancy or health setbacks, embarked on transformative career transitions through retraining and apprenticeships. It's a wake-up call for both individuals and policymakers to recognize the immense potential of older workers in addressing labor shortages and skill gaps. 👉 But here's the kicker: while stories like these are heartening, they also expose a glaring gap in our support systems. Where are the comprehensive government initiatives to empower older workers through targeted programs? Why are promising schemes like "returnerships" (a flagship apprenticeship program for over-50s in the UK) quietly scrapped instead of being amplified and expanded? 👀 It's time to challenge the status quo and demand action. Let's not let age become a barrier to opportunity. Let's harness the wealth of experience and wisdom our seasoned professionals bring to the table. Let's invest in lifelong learning and career transitions, ensuring that no one is left behind in the rapidly evolving job market. 💡 Share your thoughts: Are you ready to embrace a new chapter in your career journey? How can we better support older workers in their quest for reinvention? Let's spark a conversation and ignite change! #AgeIsJustANumber #CareerTransformation #SkillsForLife 🔥🚀

Employers suck at one thing.😅 Employers suck at being apprentices. By that I mean, they suck at being able to think like us! They suck at thinking that they can create a program for us without being us. 🤷♂️ Look, I’m not saying what they’re doing is completely whacky or wrong. [I know it sounds like it but I’m not 😬] I’m saying they could be better, which in turn, would leave them more satisfied with the outcomes of that program.🤝 In places such as: - Conversion - Completion - Lower Rec Costs Of course, I get it, it’s hard to think like us. [its not] So, where is the best place to start? Start here:👀 - Ask your apprentices what they want to see and do! - Ask them how happy they actually are at work, are they ok? - Work in collaboration with your apprentices to create a working experience built on trust, respect and understanding. It sounds so simple… Because it is. I know you guys have a lot on your plate anyway, but let’s remember that you brought in apprentices to benefit your business with the understanding they are an investment. 🚀 If you want some help, give me a shout! #ApprenticeshipPrograms #Employers #Community

✍️ In a recent opinion piece for FE News, Nichola Hay MBE, Director of Apprenticeship Policy and Strategy at BPP, suggests that introducing more apprenticeship and workplace training opportunities in businesses could help to tackle the UK’s job satisfaction crisis. ♻️ Enabling employees to develop new skills - or improve on their current skillset, she argues, reflects employers’ commitment to employee growth, and will in turn enhance job satisfaction, productivity, and retention. 🗣️ “Ultimately, apprenticeships and on-the-job training are a great way for businesses to help reposition the current attitude toward work and career changes within the country. This will boost the UK economy by increasing productivity within businesses and decreasing employee turnover. In turn, we hope to see a shift in mindset towards work amongst the UK population and the UK no longer be the home to one of the most dissatisfied workforces in all of Europe.” #apprenticeships #jobsatisfaction #business https://lnkd.in/eZB6uYcT

I recently attended the launch of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF)'s UK Poverty 2024 report – an excellent albeit deeply depressing piece of research. Essentially, over the past two decades, poverty has worsened: 6 million people lived in very deep poverty in 2021/22 compared to 1.5million 20 years ago, and nearly 4 million people experienced destitution in 2022, including 1 million children. Securing good work is one of the most effective routes out of poverty. But we know that many people face barriers to work because of their background or life experience. Apprenticeships can and should be a vehicle for social mobility, making careers that may have previously seemed out of reach much more accessible. Today, as part of National Apprenticeships Week, I wanted to share a couple of snippets that show how three of the brilliant employers that I work with through Business in the Community's Opening Doors inclusive recruitment campaign are striving to improve social mobility through apprenticeships. Heathrow owns and runs Heathrow, Europe’s busiest airport. Through its shared apprenticeship scheme which it operates with its construction and infrastructure supply chain partners, it has supported 106 individuals to begin their careers at the airport. More than four-fifths of those apprentices were previously unemployed or on minimum wage employment, two-thirds are from ethnically diverse backgrounds, one quarter are women, and 4% have a disability. Thames Water is the UK’s largest water and wastewater company, serving over 15 million customers. An inclusive employer who works closely to support its communities, over the past two years it has recruited 91 people to its apprenticeship scheme. Nearly one third of its current intake are ethnically diverse, a quarter are female, and 39% are from low socio-economic backgrounds. KPMG is a global network of professional firms providing Audit, Tax and Advisory services. Its proud of the role it plays in training the next generation of industry leaders, and the firm has been committed to improving social mobility for over a decade. With 900 apprentices in exciting roles ranging from Audit and Tax, through to Consulting and KPMG Business Services, the firm recognises the vital role apprenticeships play in broadening access to professional services careers. Last year, KPMG welcomed around 1,400 students, and 17 percent were from lower socio-economic backgrounds. There is a huge amount to do if we are to reverse the poverty trends. But making good work more accessible is a good place to start. #inclusiverecruitment #openingdoors #nationalapprenticeshipweek

I was very disappointed to discover that Returnerships (apprenticeship type programmes for over 50's) are no longer going ahead. As this article explains, getting over 50's back into the workforce or upskilling them will significantly boost the economy and productivity. Over 50's have a wealth of knowledge, skills, wisdom and experience that can only be developed over time. Age diversity is an important component of any strong workforce. According to CIPHR statistics, the most common form of workplace discrimination reported in the UK is age discrimination. More than 1 in 20 said they had experienced workplace discrimination based on their age. We need to urgently find other solutions to support this cohort in their careers with our organisations. Innovating flexible experiential learning options that upskill and reskill while still drawing on the valuable life and work experience that over 50's bring needs to be high on our agendas.
