The Federal Communications Commission has officially adopted #georouting for calls to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which means callers who need in-person help will be able to receive it much more quickly and efficiently. It is critical for people in crisis to have access to the right resources in their community. This is a meaningful advancement in supporting mental health and suicide prevention efforts. I’m glad to see this step toward improving access to crisis care. Routing #988calls based on location helps ensure that people in crisis can access local resources, which is crucial because: 1. Familiarity with Local Needs: Local resources are more likely to understand the unique challenges and services available in the caller’s community, which can lead to more personalized and relevant support. 2. Faster Response Times: By connecting directly to local services, callers can receive help more quickly, potentially reducing wait times for intervention and increasing the chances of receiving in-person support if needed. 3. Community-Specific Resources: Local organizations are often better equipped to provide culturally competent care and can offer support that aligns with the community’s specific mental health needs, improving overall care outcomes.
