Apprentices 💫 We are mid way through the week… What’s your plans to protect your OTJ hours? Employers 💫 As a reminder your full time apprentices should do a minimum of 6️⃣ hours OTJ per week. Part time apprentices OTJ training hours may vary but should make up at least 20% of their working hours. If in doubt or if you are struggling to meet these requirement, do reach out to your training provider for support. The U.S. Department of Labor has proposed new rules for the national #apprenticeship system. In my latest piece, I zoomed in on the need for shared definitions, specifically I am concerned the new “CTE apprenticeship” will confuse people and undermine effective outreach. I argue the DOL should focus on streamlining and fleshing out existing terms, not creating a new ones, and avoid technical jargon like “CTE” in shared definitions. You can submit comments on the proposed rules until March 18th.

Dual TVET is a type of vocational training that combines theoretical learning with practical, hands-on experience in a workplace setting. It aims to provide students with both technical expertise and real-world skills, preparing them for specific careers in various industries. Key features of Dual TVET: * Combination of classroom learning and workplace experience: Students spend part of their time in a TVET institution and the other part in a company or industry setting. * Industry partnerships: Dual TVET programs often involve collaborations with companies to ensure that the training is aligned with industry needs and standards. * Mentorship and guidance: Students receive support from both academic instructors and industry mentors throughout their training. * Focus on practical skills: The emphasis is on developing hands-on skills and competencies that are directly applicable to the workplace. Benefits of Dual TVET: * Improved employability: Dual TVET graduates are better prepared for the job market as they have both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. * Higher quality training: The involvement of industry partners ensures that training is relevant and up-to-date. * Reduced skills gap: Dual TVET helps to bridge the gap between education and the workplace by providing students with the skills that employers need. * Increased earning potential: Dual TVET graduates often have higher starting salaries and better career prospects. Examples of Dual TVET programs: * Apprenticeships: Apprenticeships are a common form of Dual TVET, where students learn a trade while working for an employer. * Internships: Internships provide students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in a specific industry or company. * Work-study programs: Work-study programs combine part-time work with part-time study, allowing students to earn money while gaining valuable work experience. Overall, Dual TVET is a valuable approach to vocational training that can help students develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the modern workforce.

Registered apprentice programs can’t keep up with demand for new labor "In order to meet that demand for construction workers, you need to attract about half of high school graduates in the U.S. and you need to do it like ASAP...there’s a lot that’s unclear about why more young people don’t pursue construction and whether or not they stay in the industry after an apprenticeship ends." Should Functional Skills exit requirements in apprenticeships be removed? I am certainly in favour of removing the requirement, which seemingly creates a barrier to learners, especially those wanting to undertake a Level 2 apprenticeship. Learners should most definitely be supported and upskilled, but this should be seen as an opportunity to aid personal development and plug skills gaps which will ultimately benefit individuals. I hope the move away from the rather draconian prerequisite is made sooner rather than later, to help open up apprenticeship opportunities to those who are currently being pushed out. #maths #english #apprenticeships #functionalskills #gcse
