Outcome measures are important…subjective “feeling like what we do makes a difference” and having baseline data and measurement-based care, leads to more of a “knowing what we do is making a difference”. I’m so glad to be a part of a strong clinical team that looks at data in various ways to help inform our treatment and interventions. #measurementbasedcare #outcomes #scienceandresearch
Little Warriors recognizes the importance of continually assessing and improving program design for our Be Brave Ranch intensive treatment programs. By utilizing a process known as Measurement-Based Care (MBC), Little Warriors collects important clinical data aimed at informing treatment approaches. Through a partnership with the University of Alberta’s Department of Psychiatry, Little Warriors aims to use MBC to develop an evidence-based standard of excellence for the treatment of child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors. In our dynamic realm of mental health, it's imperative to remember that occasionally, our responsibilities transcend the boundaries of the clinic. 🏥 As psychiatrists, sometimes we wear both the hat of a healer and an advocate. In the judicial arena, our role can expand to that of an expert witness. It's not just about sharing expertise, but truly advocating for our patients. 📜 Actions can range from drafting letters that illuminate a patient's mental state, to standing before the court, presenting our insights. 🤝 Every step is a commitment to holistic patient care and highlights the crucial overlap of psychiatry and justice. #mentalhealth #courtroom #expertwitness #psychiatrist #patients

Are You Really Surprised? 📱❌ Giving your child a device to calm their tantrums might seem like a quick fix, but are you prepared for the long-term consequences? A recent study from Frontiers in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry highlights the potential negative impacts of using screens to manage children's behavior. It turns out, reliance on devices can lead to developmental and emotional challenges. Let’s rethink our approach to parenting in the digital age. Pleased to have completed the 'Child and Adolescent Mood Disorders' course offered by Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth Dartmouth Health Children's ! This insightful video lecture, led by Steven Schlozman, M.D. offered a deep dive into the complexities of pediatric mood disorders and their treatment. The course covered a wide range of important topics, including: ● An introduction to the moving target of child psychiatry and the nuances of adolescent brain development. ● Detailed discussions on pediatric depression, pediatric bipolar disorder, and pediatric suicidal behavior. ● Less researched areas like the diagnosis and treatment of juvenile mania and the growing awareness of DMDD (Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder). The focus on treatments was particularly valuable, with evidence-based recommendations for managing these disorders using a combination of medications, psychotherapies, and community interventions. A notable highlight was the exploration of the effectiveness of second-generation antipsychotics in treating severe mood disorders in young patients. I also gained deeper insights into the comorbidities of mood disorders and the critical role they play in pediatric care. The course also emphasized that mood disorders are one of the largest risk factors for juvenile suicidality, shedding light on the importance of early intervention and comprehensive care to reduce this risk. This course has deepened my understanding of the challenges in diagnosing and treating mood disorders in young patients, and I look forward to applying this knowledge in clinical practice. #ChildPsychiatry #AdolescentMentalHealth #MoodDisorders #PediatricCare #DepressionInYouth #SuicidalityPrevention #ChildDevelopment #EarlyIntervention #DartmouthMedicine #ContinuingEducation

Our review paper is out! It is entitled: The Impact of Maternal Interpersonal Violent Trauma and Related Psychopathology on Child Outcomes and Intergenerational Transmission. An important point made is that it is not as much the experience of violence that has the impact but how the caregiver's and child's minds process the experience. If overwhelmed with a shaky foundation due to a troubled relationship with the primary attachment figure(s), it is rather the trauma-related psychopathology that most significantly impacts the outcome. "For my providers it helps more confidently rule in our rule out" (#ADHD) Stoni Johnston, APRN she continues, "gamification adds elements that create a more engaging test-taking experience – one of the main risks with this is performance hindrance. Game elements are known to normalize the performance of people with ADHD, which means test takers are able to pay higher levels of attention than usual. This increases the risk of false negative results." Read her full case study here - https://lnkd.in/ej2F5Hte
Choosing an ADHD test that includes a measure of hyperactivity is essential for an accurate diagnosis. Sulcata Psychiatry recently made the switch to QbTest for ADHD assessments after using a solution that did not. Its founder, Stoni Johnston shares how, with the visual representation of hyperactivity, they now have a medical device that has boosted her clinical team’s confidence and improved her practice’s diagnostic outcomes.
