In South Africa, the definition of "youth" has often extended beyond its intended demographic, encompassing individuals well into their 30s and beyond. It's time we normalize recognizing 35+ as middle-aged rather than youth. 🌍 Being middle-aged is a phase to be embraced, not shied away from. It represents a time of established careers, life experiences, and maturity. When individuals in their mid-30s or older identify as youth, it not only blurs the line of generational identity but also encroaches on spaces and opportunities meant for the younger generation—our Gen Zers. As someone in my late 20s, I understand the importance of recognizing where we stand. While I am still within the youth category, I see the value in creating distinct spaces for each age group. It's not about excluding anyone but ensuring that opportunities meant for the younger generation are accessible to them. Let's create space for the youth to thrive, explore, and innovate, while those of us approaching middle age bring our seasoned perspectives to support and guide.
